what does everybody know about getting pet skunks. I have been told that they make good pets.... anybody know? All I know is I love skunks.... And that I'm tired of the baby skunks in my yard dying because their mother is killed before they are able to fend for themselves... (pest control in my neighborhood is handled with a bb gun)
My cousin had a skunk. She finally had to give it up due to severe aggression problems. Honestly, they don't make the best of pets for everyone. They need a person who is very experienced in handling pets. They NEED to be altered or they will become very aggressive. When they are altered, they can make great peats for the right person, but still do not make good pets for most people, especially skunks taken straight from the wild. In most places they are illegal as pets because they can be quite dangerous and can carry rabies. I see you live in Illinois. They are illegal there.
Lets put it this way... Never had an animal that didn't love me.... Not planning on taking one from the wild, though if the mother dies I might not have a choice. I never take animals from the wild, except for once, another illegal pet, a baby opposum that had a dead mother. Raised it for a few weeks and let it go. Of course, that was a real pain in the ass to do... when it was that young you have to take such good care of it.
We considered getting a skunk, but I believe in Maine you have to have a special permit to get one. So check that out in your state. I have heard they can be aggressive too and that they don't forget. So if you do something to make them angry they'll remember it and get you back for it later. They do have to be altered and descented. They also have to have a good diet. I believe they eat dog food and veggies. Do a google search.
A gf of mine had a pet skunk, it still had its little weapon but never sprayed anyone.. It was illegal so only few ppl knew.. I remember her brother Chris holding 1 end of a sock and the skunk would pull on the other and it would turn around and cock its tail up like it was going to spray you but never did.. It was so adorable.. It would eat, play, and sleep.. It slept under Chris' bed and eventually it had a smell.. Where I live, ppl run over them and kill them for the fun of it.. Sad..
