So, how do you know if it's not been killed? Obviously you can only eat what you grow yourself; sounds like a pretty hardcored diet - more a lifestyle that a diet. And presumably you're not allowed to weed your garden? Or kill pests?

You're right. Inevitably it will become a complete lifestyle change. I'm not quite there yet, but getting closer every day. I definitely DO NOT kill 'pests'. For example, last summer the ants claimed my pears before I had a chance. I just laughed at myself for being a lazy ass! This year I'll be quicker than them. But I certainly won't kill them for beating me to the prize.

Neither do I weed my garden. I don't have a garden; it's just a tangled wilderness that happens to bear fruit (even better... no work!). You can do it, man. Anyone can do it. Just take it one step at a time. :)

I suggest you try to talk to your parents about somehow getting the food you'd like to be eating.

wow. so, what about the plants that are starved by the roots of your pear tree? The more you encourage one thing to grow, the more resources it takes from other things. You could be starving grass to death. Can you live with that?

lol. That's a bit of a stretch dude. What pear trees do with their own lives is their own business. If a lion wants to eat a gazelle, it will make me sad, but I won't interfere. That would be both arrogant and incredibly stupid. The point is to make our own *personal* lives as inoffensive as possible, first.

I repeat: I do not have a garden. I don't weed, water, fertilize or encourage anything. I'm just lucky to have found a spot where pears, blueberries and figs blossom naturally.

And that's enough for you to live? That's more than lucky; you're blessed! ;-P

[IMG] Yeah right! These fruits are so small, they're more like gummi-bears. Don't tell anyone, but I run down to the local supermarket for my real sustenance. Totally sucks. But I hear there are places in the world where coconuts, mangoes & papayas are literally falling by the roadside. If you got any suggestions I'm listening!

Being fruitarian always seemed a little too extreme for me. I'm currently a lacto vegetarian, and can see myself going vegan in years to come. But just fruit and nuts...I don't know about that.

I always forget the nuts...gotta try some of those. Where I live there's an organic food co-op down the street where I can get organic fruits and nuts and seeds for my yard. LOVE that place.

The problem when lacking some nutrients, especially b12, is that it can take years for syptoms to develop, and sometimes, damage is irreversible.

please read the link that the other poster provided.
    http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/raw_food.php

    and this one
    http://www.veganhealth.org/b12/all

It's not just meat eating "hillbillies" that recommend supplements,
this info is available on vegan web sites.

    At least take a B12.

you can get b12 without taking a pill.... .i actually heard its in apples from this chick who runs a raw vegan foods restaurant, which i sordove doubt, but i take a vitamin like once a week or so, so im not too worried about it. most people who ate meat their whole life have enough b12 to get by for years without any problems at all. i know its in like organic seaweed which is delicious in salads and limestone and some other stuff though...

lol... Naw man, it's not like that. Check out the philosophy of Jainism: if you can live without taking life, then why not? I see it as an interesting challenge.

Regarding the vitamin suppliment debate, Fractual's right; there are plenty of B sources. You just have to be smart about it. I know that Gandhi lived to a ripe, old age as a fruitarian (no suppliments, obviously). If I could be half as healthy as he was, I'd consider it a perfect life. I think he was allergic to bullets, though...

hahaha. That's what I think of when I hear about supplements and pills... Ghandi never took supplements.

ghandi did lots of fasting too i think, which is supposed to be real good for you. undernutrition is actually looking to be more healthy than overnourished bodies, teaches your body to be resourceful i imagine.
