I am just wondering, when will this trend in hippie clothing end? I am tired of making unique clothes and seeing such beautiful, one-of-a-kind designs on this forum, only to find out that they are being sold in stores that mass-produce them!! It pisses me off!

    How soon will it end?

Four score and many years ago when I was in Jr. High there was a hippy trend that lasted about 2-3 years. Hopefully this one will be short lived.

I Think it will end soon... White jeans are coming back in style and neon colors... that mean the 80's are coming back .. Which is a good and bad thing.. good no more hippie clothes but bad cause the 80s clothes sucked

Why is it so bad that people are able to buy hippy style clothing in stores? I never understood the whole oposition to style and trends. People llike different things, so what?

I have friends that like hippy clothing and friends that dress in Banana Republic. It doesn't make me or them any better.

People are people and if they choose to express themselves in whatever kind of clothing they want, so be it.

    Love, not hate.

she told me about how she was in highschool, and this chick was wearing white jeans and got her period.....

that made me stay far away from white jeans.... far far away..

    Good point.... sorry.

I just have this big obsession with being ultra-unique, and it just seems to get on my nerves a bit. I know it doesn't make anyone better than anyone, like I said, it justs gets on my nerves.

If you proclaim your "look" any certain style like "hippie" you are not unique. I like some of the clothes I see now. I love the stuff that's all beaded. I don't buy it though I make something similar. What should they sell for clothes? There has to be a trend you don't have to follow it exactly though and that would make you different.

    My 2 cents:
The whole point of being a hippy was to be creative and go against the grain of what was considered "in" at the time. Rebel against the man, to quote an aquaintance of mine.
Anything that was mass produced lost its appeal. Kinda like the grunge look of the early 90's. It was anti-fashion until mainstream got ahold of it and every kid was wearing flannel after that. Then the people who had began wearing it in the first place, got pissed and dropped it.
Clothing can mean a lot. its can be a signal to others for what you stand for.
If it makes me snob, then so be it but Im going to feel a lot more open with people who are dressed hippy or goth, than people wearing bannana republic or gap, because its a signal that these people are more likely to have similar ideas and viewpoints as me.

I say, leave acid queen alone. everyone here knows what she meant, even if she didnt phrase it in perfectly politically correct style.

Ive punched holes in my face ...dyed my hair colors...dreaded...permed...crimped and curled...worn baby pink lipstick....worn no makeup at all...glittered and glitzed...done patches...done louis vuitton....

thats how I like it. Fuck worrying about what's popular. You want to be different, just like everyone else.

So what if the "hippie" clothing is popular right now. The fact that you wear the clothing and others obviously like it should flatter you.

    Dont discriminate,fornicate :)

I think that it's ok to be frustrated with popular trends. especially this one...

i get the feeling that the reason people buy pre faded and torn clothing is because they want to be associated with a lifestyle that they perhaps admire but will not actually live out. they want to be precieved as "bad ass" or "deep" as someone with a lot of integrity and will. naturally, one sees someone with torn, faded clothes and precieves a "hard times" or "rebel" image. and as long as they(the consumer) sucessfully project this image, they feel this way about themselves (as far as their ego goes). btw, our culture(western culture) is insanely based on ego.

i think that it's a very deeply rooted perception, programmed into our(western culture) minds mostly by movies and advertising. it seems kind of like one doesn't need to be true to themselves as long as they have the image... this is kind of frightening to me (i can see it in myself) and very frustrating because it generates more delusional and unlimatly destructive behavior in social psychological ways, at least. we spend more time buying into the image of what we want rather than going out and doing what we want. in a, perhaps slightly paranoid way, i can see how this could be used as a tool of supression. "don't actaully do these things... just look like you do :)"

here's a short read that goes further and is more clear: Seduced by the Image of Reality

"...usually the opposite is true, that adventure is to be found precisely where there is no time or energy for keeping up appearances"

    "
Whatever each us may be looking for, we all tend to pursue our desires by pursuing images: symbols of the things we desire. We buy leather jackets when we want rebellion and danger. We purchase fast cars not for the sake of driving fast, but to recapture our lost youth. When we want world revolution, we buy political pamphlets and bumper stickers. Somehow we assume that having all the right accessories will get us the perfect lives. And when we construct our lives, we often do it according to an image, a pattern that has been laid out for us: hippie, businessman, housewife, punk."

I don't happen to like most of the "hippy style" tops that I've seen all over the store. I like that they are beaded, but most of them look so cheap, and in such stupid looking fabrics. I love good quality indian tunics and embroidered peasant blouses though, I love them with jeans.
I just can't wait for the trend to be over also, for the simple fact that there will be lots of awesome skirts in the thrift store soon!
Ok, so I'm a skirtaholic... I love krinkly skirts, tiered skirts, etc. I bet I have 25 or more. But, I've only bought prolly one or two in a store other than Goodwill.
Plus my grandma is such a hip chick. She wears lots and lots of silver, turquoise, lots of indian jewelery (my grandparents sell it) She always wears long skirts. She sews most of them herself, really cool ones. Lots of tiered ones and crinkly ones. She has more clothes than anyone I know, but heck some of them are 20 years old or more. Every month or so she gets rid of a trash bag or two of them. She'll give them to me to look thru then I take them to good will. I've got a lot of awesome skirts from her too.

The shit in stores looks cheap, isn't very well made, and most people that would buy from the sisters wouldn't buy that crap anyways. Maybe it'll just make it all a lil more acceptable by middle america, like when a few Hollywood stars started sporting dreads too, and open up a few kids to something different in life. At least now they don't look totally shocked to see a dready chick, or brother or someone dressed all hippiefried.Their mouths don't fly open but they still look at me like the mothership done spit me out right in fronta them at times, hehe
