what's with the hatred of PVC pipe bongs. the way i make em i take a pen with a metal tip, take off the metal tip, flip it, and melt it onto the pen shaft. then, i take the PVC pipe and cut a hole in it to but in the pen. then duct tape it so it's water-tight. someone please tell me what's wrong with doing that?

    peace, keith sweezy

Who knows? I would worry that when heating your pvc you are creating some dangerous chemical outgasing and giving yourself a dose of poison while smoking your otherwise natural reef.

    Just a thought.

I'll be nice but dood come one burning any type of plastic will release a poisionus gas. especially PVC if the PVC doesn't get hot ur fine, you should invest in a nice down pipe to replace the pen an aslong as the pvc doesn't get hot. get a very tall down pipe and always make sure there is water.

PVC outgasses toxic vapors even when NOT heated. You know that "plastic smell" it gives off, especially when freshly cut?

other than the toxic fumes that ellis wrote about, you're probably melting that plastic pen too. i'm sure that's not very healthy. i used to make pvc pipe bongs with trumpet mouthpieces. gotta find something else though. if you gotta make one, try a gatorade bottle with a completely metal stem (not your pen idea).

You could be real creative, like early man :) and carve yourself one out of wood...or you could be a bit more savvy like bronze age man and chip yourself one out of a rock..
...but that might take away from the 21st century man's computer!

do you have a reason why it's bad if you don't heat it?

Ok... Heres what Ellis is saying in simple terms. Your sucking down toxic gasses even if its not getting hot or even warm. You can smell them coming off the pvc alone. It leads to bad shit in your body.

seriously, pvc is some nasty shit. the toxins it releases in its cycle is gross. all the chemicals used for the production of pvc is just nasty and i don't understand why someone would wanna smoke with it. one of the main chemicals is chlorine and you breathe it in when you use the pvc pipe, plus there are so many other toxins in it. its just plain out not good for your health.

check out this website if you want to learn what is in pvc:

The Black abs are the worst about gasses, but pvc is really bad in itself.

If you must have a plastic bong why don't you get one of the "honey bears"
You know the little jars of honey that look like a bear- they make good bongs.
lose the PVC one though- it will kill you sowly and painfully with some knarly cancer or emphesyma.
I used to make them as a kid, but when i went to work/school for landscaping i found out how many toxins are involved. Don't risk it? would you want to even use chemicals to grow your own- NO nobody likes to smoke chemical grow man.

have you got one "yes it is O.K."? No nobody in their right mind would question a scientist- and they have proven this to be extrmely toxic.

I dunno about that. I work in a lab full of PhDs, and I've heard scientists spout some pretty questionable shit over the years. Sometimes it seems that common sense is inversely proportional to years of formal education completed...:)

That said, PVC is one of the most toxic of modern materials. Unfortunately, it is also one of the cheapest and most useful plastics around...
