The original hippies in the 1965 thru 1972 ( Vietnam) period were Anarchists. After the war ended, The Movement lost its main gathering around point. At the same time widening marajuana use brought diferent cultural types into the movment. I remember that after the Vietnam war concluded it was more about partying than any political qualification. I always thought of a hippie as apolitical. Neither major party being worthy of trust. Vietnam was after all a bi-political war. Iraq and the Patriot act are also bi-political. neither political party gives any hope for marjuana reform today. Legalization was absent from Michael Moores Farenheit 911. Libretarian concepts like small goverment appeal to hippies and conservatives alike. Conservative Wiliam F. Buckley is one of the very few people in public life to advocate marajuana reform. I'm always extremely pissed off by politicos who want my help to repeal the Patriot Act, but if, and when I'm arrested for weed, they will be off chasing baby seals or dams or some other issue while I rot in jail or my home is confiscated.
Not all conservatives are neocons. And ... what the heck do you know about my life, aside from my posts? The two writers I mentioned bash neocons consistently. Both are conservative libertarians.
Here is a link to an interesting article by the late Sam Francis (he died in February of this year): http://www.vdare.com/francis/paleo.htm "The larger truth is that there has been a paleo-conservative critique of neo-conservatism for years, developed, as Mr. Foer notes, in such magazines as Chronicles and in the columns and books of such folks as Pat Buchanan, historian Paul Gottfried and yours truly. [...] "Neo-conservative liberalism is not confined to support for spreading democracy by force, in the tradition of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt, but also includes their sympathy for big government and mass immigration, among other liberal causes. As for the paleos, Mr. Foer seems to think their skepticism toward the Iraq war is rooted in opposition to the state. That's partly true, but there are other reasons as well. "Paleos [i.e., paleo-conservatives] do not necessarily oppose war (or the state). They just oppose this war [i.e., the Iraq War] and this state -- the war because it's not in the interest of the nation, is not dictated by our security needs and serves to deflect and distract us from more dangerous enemies and threats; the state, because in the hands of liberals and neo-conservatives it has become an enemy of the real American nation, undermining its people and civilization and invading its freedoms."
I could never be a liberal. Sure they are looking out for the common people and trying to help them with welfare and things like that. But they are using up all of our social security, when I get old, there will be none of it left. All of the people that don't work today who are living off my paycheck need to get a job instead of just putting their hand out to be given everything. Liberal government pretty much owns the media and uses it to twist words around and make everything look in their favor. The conservatives are big bullies and we were just trying to make a statement. The turn everything that conservatives try to do around and make them look as bad as possible. And all the people watching this are being fed lies and are believing them. If conservatives had control of the media and the people could get more of the truth about the conservative side our government would be a whole lot different, and anyone who cared at all about the future would go conservative.
Who said you had to be a liberal to do that? I know several conservatives around here who are on disability but they have the ability to work... Other than that, I really don't care. Right now, my attitude is fuck the gov't... I sometimes wonder what it would be like if Kucinich had made it.
A conservative hippie? Talk about an oxymoron. That's akin to a black Ku Klux Klansman or a Jewish Nazi. It's just as ludicrous in terms of personal style. Can you imagine a longhaired, tie-dyed hippie working the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange? -- Skeeter
well first of all, we don't have a liberal government. shit, we've hardly got anyone left in the gov that can even pass as a liberal. and second...I don't think anyone really believes that liberal media thing anymore. The neocons have the power, so they've stopped even trying to make the pretense. Turn off the Fox news and take a look around.
In my limited understanding of the whole subject, an hippie certainly can be a lot of things but not a conservative tho' there may be some "conservative" ideals among the ideals of what was originally the hippie movement. Hippies did start as anarchists. Later some communistic ideals evolved into the idealogy. Hippies, in their rejection of the "establishment," formed communes. This mostly didn't work out that well for most and people moved back into mainstream society a bit more. Many took "liberal" ideology as a package deal and became democrats. Liberals believe that the government should serve the people, which is not a bad thought but it leads to larger government. Conservatives espouse the ideal of smaller central govt., but in reality what is done is to limit govt where it benefits the wealthy and empower govt where it benefits the wealthy. "Hippie" in it's original true sense is neither conservative or liberal. p.s. conservatism is currently a front for fascism.
But he cut off his long locks, shaved off his beard and started wearing a suit and tie before he started working at the NYSE. It was a requirement of his job. -- Skeeter
I dunno. Hippyism seems to be about going against consensus in favour of making your own mind up (or was that just punk?). Seems like a real hippy can believe what it wants, irrespective of authority. it doesn't have to be just a knee-jerk reaction against it. Personally, I believe authority can be a very good thing, based on the way people conduct themselves when it is absent. Why is this in this forum?
Everything was a free-for-all until the wife and kids. Now I'm learning to embrace these "suburban values" that I've been accused of having. I vote democrat, but listen with interest to my Dad's stories about the politics of Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson. I like going to music festivals with my family but I am apalled at the lack of discretion people exhibit concerning drug use (I'm still pro-weed, but I don't advertise). I believe in saving the Earth for future generations. I believe in the government helping those who need it and leaving everyone else alone. Most of my friends call me a "liberal", though I shun that description because I believe that you've got to stand for something even if it's just in your corner of the world, and not adapt every "cause". I support local charities and public radio/television. I still get freaky with my wife as much as possible and don't give a fuck about what society thinks about the way we look/act when we're in public (open affection etc..). I've adapted the "good enough" philosophy when it comes to consumerism (I don't need the best, just good enough to suit my family's needs). I write politicians and tell them what I think regularly, pro and con. I believe in education of all kinds and want my kids to experience as much as they can and form their own opinions. So...I think that you can be conservative in some regards and be radical in others. Whatever suits you as long as you try to improve things while your here for those that are coming later. Just my 2 cents...
Ah, yes. . . "The wife and kids." Getting married and becoming a parent has always been -- and will always be -- "The Great Consevatizer." Marriage and parenthood will turn even the most radical lefty into at least a "middle-of-the-road" moderate, if not a conservative. It's no coincidence that social radicals have three things in common: They're young, unmarried and childless. It's much easier to stay true to your beliefs even as you grow older, as long as you're not burdened with the responsibility of supporting a spouse and children. Maybe this is the real reason why social conservatives hate liberals so much. They're ticked off that many liberals -- unmarried and childless -- can still do what many social conservatives can't do anymore because they've got spouses and children to support. -- Skeeter
Hi. I support hippy ideals like "small is beautiful", respect for the Earth, green politics, the liberalisation of drugs etc. + I'm a racist & a radical traditionalist (pagan). The rise of New World Order and the decline of the West are already witnessing a blending of formerly contradictory ideals. In a world where subversion is order, the only way to be truly conservative is to be an anarchist. Sieg Heil!
conservative just means selfish....they say 'theres no such thing as society' and just how inhuman and 'we are the world' is that? not hippy.
i also think it is, i am conservative about a lot of things... i hate it when ppl start bashing corporations and advocate big governments... at least the corporations actually make something instead of just wasting our money on stupid wars... maybe that makes me a fake hippy... peace
