In my opinion if i see god i will go hey man hows it goin ok cool this is happens eh? alright cool man. Religions are created by man not by god you see if god created religions then i would follow them but he didnt. so im going to believe what i think suits my life. I have no possible way of knowing what is next so why does it matter waht someoene believes. i mean if there is a god and it gave us free will then i think it should be cool with us thinkin it doesn't exist.

Organized religion, depending on its form, is what lead people out of darnkness into light.

Actually, no. Do you even read your bible? Or do you just trust whatever your spiritual leader says is in it? The ignorance of Christian doctrine I see demostrated each day on this forum by professed devout Christians amazes me.

Once again... According to Christian doctrine (based on what is written in the bible - look it up), no one goes to heaven or to hell when they die. Thier souls just sort of go to sleep until Jesus returns to reseurrect them for the day of judgement. At which point, all people (Christian, Jewish, Pagan, Hindu, etc.) are ressurected (not just Christians), after that, Jesus will consult the "Book of Life" and those whose are are in it go to heaven, everyone else goes to hell.

I think we sometimes saddle the term "religion" with more significance than it deserves.

As we seek, grow, and develop, we develop our "religion" as we develop our "soul"......we can each have a unique "path" of seeking and discovering and yet still attain the same end.

i havent read everything here, but the first few and i agree with you...

i feel that some religions ( and im not naming any because i dont want to start trouble) are made up of such bull shit and lies and things that dont make sense... *sigh* i hate to be learning about it in school when i could be organizing things to stop homosexual discrimination or doing something more constructive like helping the world.. not forcing people to live for some super natural thing that probably doesnt even exist.

i wonder what it is like to be Amber. To think that you indeed know the only truth. It must be amazing. I cannot imagine being so dilluded as to think i know the secrets to life, let alone tell others about them.

on that subject, i've been finding myself becoming more and more bollixed up lately; having a nice discussion on philosophy & religion with one of my roommate's extremely fundie friends who literally shook his head while i talked, as if dodging my words, i was surprised to feel myself clenching my teeth in frustration.

it's silly to be unable to hold oneself together in a civil discussion of beliefs, and even sillier to become completely frustrated when you find yourself unable to bend others to your will, resentment seems dangerous. what do you do when you find yourself surrounded by hordes of intolerant, unquestioning, self-assured standpats?
....seriously, what do you do? i want to know. :)

While I believe all religions can guide a person to do good works among the living if properly understood, I believe C.S. Lewis makes a stellar philosophical argument for the superiority of Christianity.

Mark Twain is great! Among the finest, most perceptive minds in the history of our nation, and someone who makes me proud to be from the U.S. (I need something to cling to - no one wants to hate their own country...)

His short story "The War Prayer," is really powerful, I highly reccomend it - here is a link:

I feel you on this issue. I live my life in a world of ideas, and it's hard for me to remain calm when faced with such brickheadedness. I can generally take disagreement, but your friend was being very rude; that would have infuriated me, though I probably would have kept it inside.

So it's something I'm working on. You have to just pick your battles. I have a friend like yours, though he has more respect for me than yours; and we can have intelligent interesting discussions in a friendly way, though I greatly disagree with him on many points (it's a wonder we're even friends, really). So when I begin to see there is no point in continuing the discussion due to one or both of us being unwilling to change views, I call an end to it. Ideas are important to me, but not usually enough to ruin a friendship (there are exceptions, though I've not confronted them yet).

I try also to remind myself that we are all different, have had different experiences in life that led us to our views, and also that our journey is not finished; suchly, my ideas could be very wrong, and so could his...so why should I strive to satisfy my egoic urge to be right? Truth will show itself on it's own in one way or the other. Discussion is good and the exchange of ideas important, but being right isn't always. Besides, diversity is the spice of life, understanding that will go a long way towards finding personal peace for oneself.

I think it's a good policy to stop talking to someone once they stop making sense.

I'm not saying walk away from anybody who says something you don't understand. I'm saying if they start avoiding your questions, getting emotional, purposely take what you say out of context, etc.

My theory is if you have to use tactics to make your point seem valid--it aint.
