I just listened to Eliot Smith on the way into work today. Actually, I just kept listening to “A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free.” The way it unfolds sends goosebumps up my arms.

He’s one of my favorite songwriters of all time, probably because he was so heavily influenced by the Beatles and it shows in his music. Yet more proof as to why that formula works. His death was a horrible loss, but obviously he wanted out; you gotta really want to die to put a knife through your own heart.

I’m not too crazy about Nick Drake. I like some of his stuff… but overall he’s a little too mellow for me and I just can’t connect with him.

I recommend listening to Alex Chilton, especially the first two albums that were released when he was with Big Star. He was another of Eliot's biggest influences.... :)

they are both just so fantastic. I have only recently been introduced to the wonder and grace that was elliot smith, and it's so cool. I am listening to 'sweet adeline' right now...it is very beautiful, both lyrically and melody-wise.

Stephen Jackson and Evan Dando are both good if you like Nick Drake. Similar, I guess. Not the same, but worth a listen.

Anything from Belle and Sebastian's 'If You're Feeling Sinister' album would fit nicely on a mix with ES and ND...
