As a devoted and die-hard fan of Depp and Burton respectively, I had high hopes when first hearing of another ccollaboration, however this movie looks like it will be another "Planet of the Apes" Due to the hype, I'm sure it will gross millions, but to me the beauty of the first one was Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka. It was very melancholy and understated. His literary quotes make you think and put quite an intellectual spin on a kid's movie. I mean, can you picture Spongebob quoting Oscar Wilde or Shakespeare? Johnny Depp's portrayal, which may or may not be truer to Dahl's book, looks too comical and out there. "Chewing gum is really gross. Chewing gum I hate the most." just sounds like it's playing down to the audience to get the reaction they want from the kids. And, while the classic one did deviate TREMENDOUSLY from the book, I think it cannot be perfected and I fear that Burton may try to "over-Burton-ize" the film. When he first started out, his technique was groundbreaking and visionary, and to me he seems to have lost that and gone more for the "weirder the better" because that's what people expect of Burton and that's what brings in the most money. I for one, will see the movie in the hopes that he will do an incredible story jjustice, but I can't shake this looming feeling that I have that it will be an hour and a half of high expectations and strong disppointments.
If I can sit and watch a crappy movie like 'Mad City' just for fun, and not turn it off... then Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka is going to be almost orgasmic!!
i'm afraid i'm gonna like this film..lol..charlie and the chocolate factory was one of my fav books when i was a kid(i know i still am a kid)...which other of dahls books is made into films?? if anyone knows..please tell me..i think i'v watch the witches once...
I just saw the trailer for this movie!!! its gonna be flippin awesome..... im gonna go see it stoned.... then a week or two later when everyone has seen it and no one is gonna be in the theatre to see it... im definately gonna see this one enhanced.....
Weirder than "Edward Scissorhands"? I think that he is not trying to go for "weirder the better ....because that's what brings in more money". I think that is and has always been his style. Why change it? You're either a Burton fan or you're not. I love every single one of his films including "Big Fish" which I think may have been my favorite....and as I stated in an earlier post, as much as I love the original with Gene Wilder, I do not have any fears of being disappointed by this one.
i dunno if it will be the same as the older movie or book. sometimes with things like this you just get something new inspired by the former. It looks well done from what i have seen and i do just love Depp and his work. I think it will be good. I am not expecting to be really moved or thinking it is the best movie ever but i am sure it is worth seeing.
roul dahl is a excellent writer tim Burton is one of my favorite directors and willy wonka is the perfect role for johnny depp i cant wait by the way i heard a rumer that tom waits will be in it is this true?
I'm with you, Rider. A few years ago when I first heard this remake was in production, I thought, "Depp+Burton=magic", but since then I've been less than impressed with some of the Hollywood mainstream stuff they've been doing. I loved "Ed Wood" & "Edward Scissorhands". But gawd what's all this "Planet of the Apes" crap about? The original Willie Wonka was so thought-provoking, with its odd allusions to Shakespeare & 19th century British poets. "We are the makers of music. We are the dreamers of dreams." I remember spending hours looking up all the quotes & figuring out what they meant. Gene Wilder's performance can never be duplicated or rivalled. For one thing, no one has Gene's AWESOME HAIR! (Ever notice how it gets more demented as the movie descends into dementia?) So as much as I hate to have a negative attitude before all the facts are in, I've go to say my expectations are very low for the new movie. But I would love it if they can prove me wrong.
why do so many people seem to think they are remaking the old movie? Rest easy guys, they are not doing another version of the movie, they are filming a different version of the book. personally I can't wait for it to come out. I pretty much despise the first film - yes gene wilder was its redeming feature - but what was with the 'cheer up charlie' musical numbers, and the geese and so on? Ewwwwwwww. The book on the other hand (and dahl in general) were fanatastic, and I can't think of better people to bring that vision to life than burton and depp.
Thank you for making that point, FrozenMoonbeam. Alot of people seem to forget that alot of great movies were made from even greater books and that everyone is allowed there own adaptation of the story. I don't expect this one to copy or rival the earlier version, I just think it will be different and that's okay....although I do still love the first one, cheesy "cheer up charlie" songs and all.
I'm stoked too...it was a great movie, but with Johnny Depp, hell yeah! My fave movie with him in it was "Dead Man" with Neil Young doing ALL the music in it. Fucking ruled!!
I got a little "thang" about Depp. My kids scream for me to come into the room when a commercial for this movie comes on. And all my older kids really loved Dahl, in all his books, he was a weird dude. Ahhhhhhhhh, Johnny Depp. Burton brings out the weird in this already strange man, ya gotta love that ability. My 16 dd is a Harry Potter maniac, and she want Burton to direct the next Potter movie. I think that would be great.
I saw a trailer for this before Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy last week, it looks brilliant. I loved the book as wee nipper. Tim Burton is just the man to bring the madness of the book to the screen
IMDB lists its release date as 15th July for the USA, 29th July for the UK. Lots more international release dates are listed too for all you Johnny Foreigners: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367594/releaseinfo
new trailer came out, this movies looks cool and really solid. but its going almost looks like Alice in Wonderland or maybe a bad acid trip.
