ive been meditating for a while now and i its had such a profound effect i meditate daily if not more than once or twice.
After coming back from South East Asia, where monks introduced me to a whole new amazing type of meditation, called insightful meditation, they also advised me to use incense. I hadnt really used it much before that, although now i enjoy meditating with certain incenses on, they help to creat a great amosphere and and also an egoless aura, just wondering do other find incense helpful, or just a load of shit as a friend described it.
Be glad to hear some opinions.

    Peace Love Acceptance

I like to use incense... my favourite is Nag Champa, imho it's the best you can get here in Poland..
As for it's effects.. hmm.. if you don't believe in it's aura-puryfying effects... well it's always nice to have some special elements before and acions totaek before starting the meditation, it keeps you understanding that meditation itself is kinda special too. And if you make everything simmilar every time (use the same incense for example) it becomes easier to clean your mind, cause it recognizes the preparation actions and gets itself ready before you even sit down. Unless you get bored with having everything done the same way for months, haha :)

Incense is used, because like they say on TV? Smell is the strongest connection to memory. It can release thoughts you had in a past lifetime, and thoughts from future lifetimes.
It's 10:20 PM here, in Vegas, and I'm reaching for a stick as soon as I click on "Post This Message".

Why is 'Nag Champa' the best incense? I cant get enough of it, it smells really nice and when I do get round to properly meditating I'll definately use 'Nag Champa'.

I love incense - but beware of mass produced cheap varieties, as I have heard they can contain quite unpleasant things.

Yeah, I agree. If you're going to get 'Nag Champa' Make sure that it's in a blue and white box, thats the most popular one because it smells so nice.

I am really into incense and all things that smell nice. I like that thing about smell unlocking memory. Certain smells really have that effect on me.Recently I found out about Agarwood,or Oud,and I got some Agar incense and oil. It does something to me the smell, like a distant memory.
Another incense I have - Patchouli does that...reminds me of something I can't put my finger on.
I get really far out quality incense from this place in India. They have 2 types of amazing nag champas.

I've never tried Nagchampa before but i just ordered some from the incense man. Cost £1.98 incl. postage which isn't bad for 15 sticks. I got the gold label one from him rather than the normal one. Should be here beggining of next week so i'll let you know how it goes.
At the moment i have 3 different types of incense i use.
    1. Hem Feng Shui incense sticks - "Fire - activating energy". My gf bought these back from bulgaria, they smell nicer when they are not lit but still not bad.
    2. Encens du Monde - Purity. This is supposed to affect the throat chakra.
    3. Encens du Monde - Insight. This is supposed to affect the heart chakra.

They're not bad. Very good for calming me down while i drink some green tea in the morning :)

Absolutely! They say scent is the STONGEST of memory triggers.

It can trigger GENETIC memories as well.

If that is true - scent being a strong memory trigger - wouldn't it work contrary to the goals of meditation?

I guess it depends on the reason you are meditating, but if for Yoga (union of consciousness) it is pretty much to stop thought, which would include memory.

I don't know, my teacher had incense in the class the other day while we were meditating, at first it distracted me, then I didn't notice it after a few minutes.

Yeah i bough Nag Champa at a festival here in england last year and it was only 2 pound, all natural ingredients, and i still have over half the box left...such a bargain! I think it certainly helps set the tone and creates the right atmosphere for meditation...lovely smell too

green tea and jasmine also works welll! :D

Also music surprisingly seems to aid meditation too...obviously not rock music :p
