Hope won't Grow in Neon Light

    12-05-00

I've seen the fire of painful birth, and lights fixed brightly in the sky,
And seas dividing from the earth, I've heard the hosts of heaven sigh.

And times were good, And God did rest,
He closed His eye and pricked His ear,
As countless souls gave of their best,
A rainbow tithe of crystal cheer.

I've seen the man who took the fall, another fell upon his sword,
The man who bled for One and all, I've seen the lips that spoke the Word.

And times fell waste along the way,
Where burnt and broken human bone,
While crows did gorge and rodents play,
Were made the trim on darkness' throne.

I've seen the aching, angry sky, a fiddler thrusting down his bow,
He played the rocky mountain side and lighted field with fiery glow.

And nations rise, I've seen them spring,
They tick like clocks with rusting gears,
The warriors war, the death bells ring,
And children cry, I've counted tears.

I've seen the pretty, petty lives wound tightly in their fears and lies,
Viewed all as one, and over time, fermenting in the holy night.

And hope won't grow in neon light,
But prices climb while eyes glaze o'er,
I've seen too much - it's not alright!
I've said my piece, I'll say no more.
