    Howdy all,
I have done much travelling in my time.,.. last summer was actually the first in about foiur years that I didn't pack all my shit and leave. The reason? I was prego. But now, I'm back to my old self and have a beautiful 6 month old daughter... but as the snow's melting, and the air's getting warmer, I'm getting that itch again. I seriuosly want to travel and have all the means to do so, but is it a good idea? Have any of you guys done this? Is there anything I should know before I do it? Someone said they think it would be unfair to the baby, but I think that's bull. As long as she's got me, she's happy. What do you think? Are your babies happy on the road?

I have taken my childern on the road... actually we are trying to perm. live traveling(we are trying to buy a bigger camper so the kids have a "home"). It is fine to do just make sure you bring plenty of clothes if you can't wash often because they get extra dirty, alot of sunblock, and outfits for every weather occasion, you never know if it might actually get a little cold somewhere! If you have a vehicle, and better yet a camper you should be fine. My kids have their own little baby sleeping bags and love camping. They are much happier on the road... they play outside all day everyday. Don't let people tell you its wrong. If you can support and take care of your child on the road then do it! Playpens that can fold down and compact easily or see through tents are great for putting all of the babies toys in so they can play and be safe if your wanting some quiet time(meaning no baby running everywhere). Always have your child wear shoes and socks. I know it sounds dumb but when I let my kids run bare foot they got stung/bit by red ants, stung by bees and Croix even ended up with a horrible rash on his foot from something we still have no idea what it was. Better safe than sorry. Baby slings are nice. Since your probably going to be doing lots of walking maybe get a nice wagon? my kids have a cool wagon they sit in and get strapped in so they can't fall or climb out of. How about an umbrella to sit under for shade if the sun is really bad? A portable fan so if its really really hot baby won't get heat exaustion. A portable baby bathtub... mine have a big one that folds up nicely and you can also wash laundry in it. An emergency kit packed with all kinds of baby needs like little band-aids, stuff to clean cuts, medicine, thermometer. Just PM me anytime if you want to talk about traveling with kids. Where do you want to go?

I do have my own car, but hopefully by the time I want to take off I'll have a little camper van or winnbego or something. I'm not sure where exactly I'll go or for how long, but I know for sure I'll be going to Hornby Island (off of Vancouver Island). It's so beautiful there... I've always felt so.... at home there. It's also kinda fitting cause my mum lived there with me when I was about three months old.
I just want to go somewhere where I can think and write, because lately I've felt like I've lost myself. It could just be some hormonal thing or something, but I don't feel like myself. Did you ever go thorugh this after any of youjr babies?

Where do you get your money to live on the road permanantly?

I wouldn't be living on the road permanantly... probs a couple months tops, but I'd have some money saved, I'd also get someone to rent my house for the time I was gone and maybe charge them 100$ more than the mortgage is, and also, my boyfriend is an insane djembay player and makes about 200$ or more in about four hours of busking. THat's probably where we'd get most of our money.

Rule #1 with bairns... never let people tell you what you should an' shouldnae do wi yer bairns. You've got the instincts the "powers" that ken what yer bairn needs and as a mum you'll do everything in your power to keep them happy. Everytime I have foolishly let my instincts become overrun by someone, it has been a HUGE mistake.

I've travelled all over with my daughter Skye and through various climates (desert) and have camped out and attended anti-G8 peace meetings (Big Blether), and even brought her along to the Earthship International Summit when she was only 4 months old and she loves travellin' aboot... but, the only thing I think bairns really get upset about is lack of routine... and I mean loose routine... if you can keep loose routine they are happy!

My advice is get a sling.. a comfortable one... it will save your life! Makes travellin' life wi' bairns simple! And, hae a great time!

this sounds like so much fun.
I posted something like this a couple weeks back, and got a lot of support....I think that the only thing that I heard about it "not being good for the baby" was being trapped in a hot car in a car seat for hours on end. But that was about it. I wasn't planning on "trapping" the baby in the car for hours anyway.
But yeah, I personally think that this is awsome to do. Keeping kids in touch with nature, in my opinion, makes them appreciate life all the more. The ones who do things like this seem to be so much more "well-rounded" than the one's who's parents let them sit and watch that bloody boob-toob all day.
I don't really have any advice for you, as I haven't actually done this myself yet, and I'm prego at the moment, but my experience comes from when I was little. lol, my dad loved to camp....he would sleep in a tree if he could. sadily, it stopped when my parents got divorced, but it was so much fun while it lasted. I really think that your child will love travling around with you! This is an awsome idea!
