HHB, some of us have spent 6 months living with only what we can carry, and I don't mean ultra lightweight tents and titanium pots and expensive fuel stoves, I mean an army blanket, a bag of carrots, a pocket knife and a change of socks. While I can and occasionally still do, for the most part, I choose not. My old bones don't lie comfortably on the earth like they used to. As for kids, I can't get mine to cut the grass, much less go camping with me.

Not speaking for everyone else, this is just me. But the old ways seem lost on this new generation...:(

HHB i feel you on the wal mart tent, we have had the same one since I was 7 and it is still going strong to my knowledge. Shit I am down for old school tents, two trees, a rope and a tarp.... It will keep you pretty dry and it wont cost you more than $12

Not everyone wants to camp under a tarp. If someone asks for something good, and gives a high budget, show them what they want. If someone wants to find gear on a tight budget, show them what they want. You give the kinda help people are asking for.

My husband and I use just about the cheapest gear we can find (pop can stove, cheap tent and backpack found on ebay, cheapest sleeping bags ya can find - don't need to much warmth in Texas), but there are a few luxeries I myself would like to have on the trail, and would like to purchase in the future. Self-inflating sleeping pads are something I finally spent some bucks on recently.

What's the problem with the more wealthy kids putting money into the economy? At least it pays the poor kids paychecks. I loved those rich kids when I worked at sears selling electronics on commission.

Top ten reasons to buy new gear
    1.)GW says spending is patriotic.
2)Money spent on new gear is money not spent on fossil fuel.
3)It can be returned after the gathering anyway...
4)The rich CEO of the gear companies have servants that their profits help support
5)The rich CEO spends money on imported luxury goods, which keep third world children in jobs.
6)Old stuff is yucky..who knows what kind of hanky-panky went on in a used tent or sleeping bag.
7)The world is an illusion. Pamper yourself because you are a god of the universe.
    8)New gear is the shiznet
9)A quality tent will last for 200 years, and we will live that long because we can afford the technology to become immortal.
10)It's so easy to order online. When are thift stores and used sporting goods places gonna learn to play the game and get wired...

the reason for this hread was because in the other one about all around cheap tent the first buncha recomendations were for mid range well over 100 dollar tents..

This for a person who is gonna be camping beside there car in the desert and asked whats a good "cheap" tent???

And it seems every other time someone asks about gear the same sights and recomondations come up,, kelty REI campmor etc...

These people asking are first time campers or hikers, they may use the shit once and never use it again..
Theres no reason in my opinion to be reccomending over priced name brand gear to newbies to the world of the great outdoors.

As far as whats wrong with the poor lil rich kids buyin high dollar gear?
I guess nuthin if you wanna pay 4 times the price for a label and get no more wear out of it than bottom ine gear,, then by all means stroke your vain ass ego and think your lookin good in the process..

I just dont think its cool to reccomend exspensive ass gear to first timers or those lookin for cheap shit..
it may very well discourage them from gettin out and hiking or camping when they see the prices of some of the crap people here recommend on here..

N~E way thats just my 2 cents..
    Luv~N~Lite..

I am sorry that you feel that the old ways are lost on the newer generations. While they might not be as popular as they were then, I assure you they are not lost. They are alive and well, and in some cases just awaiting the proper time to blossom.

Yeah, your right. I could barely afford my cheap ass gear myself, and may have been discouraged from camping if I thought all gear out there was so pricy. Now that I've been doing it for a while I guess I don't consider that some are more inexperienced than I!

But to anyone looking for a place to find cheap gear, check out eBay. I got just about everyting there (even my internal-frame pack) and was able to put my gear together for around $400 for everything (I think - it was a while ago), and that was for 2 people, my husband and I. The only thing I tend to be picky about is my boots - but even then I wouldn't drop over $100 on them unless you knew you were going to be making a hobby out of hiking.

Idk, we go camping every year in the summer and we use the same tent and sleeping bags and we are far from rich. But we get new stuff when our tent or sleeping bags rip. I dont care if there is a tent or tarp over my head, as long as i dont get cold, so i dont want a rip in my blanket. :)

I grew up poor.. my parents didn't buy me anything, had to work since I was 15 and get all my own gear. But I did plenty of camping. Well I'm 24 now, and I was tired of waking up in leaky tents, freezing my ass off in a wet sleeping bag at 4am.. and having to lug around three heavy bags.

So since I plan on hiking pretty much all summer and fall this year.. I sold my car, gave most of my old gear away, and bought a nice 4 season tent that is virtually hurricane proof (and I WILL need it), a nice warm, water-resistant mummy bag, a cheap sleep pad (key) a big internal frame backpack, a worry-free camp stove, and a nice lightweight titanium cookset. Now instead of carrying around 40-45 lbs with a fully loaded pack, I'm down to about 25-30.. a huge difference at the end of the day. Now, during torrential downpours, I wake up inside my tent completely dry. I like a dry tent.

Granted, I do a lot of hiking and camping.. so this gear will see a ton of use. But frankly, I couldn't be happier with buying some high quality and lightweight gear.. it makes a huge difference in my quality of life out in the wilderness for long periods of time. Camping and hiking are much more enjoyable when you have a little piece of mind about the important stuff, and are well equipped to handle about anything. Oh, and did I mention that good boots are important.

Now you're right that beginners shouldn't just go out and buy high-end gear. Everyone should start out light.. I spent my early camping years in a cheap pup tent.. and if you are serious about buying some good equipment.. it is a good idea to rent it first to get a feel for it. Most camping stores rent tents, packs, etc.

I agree that you don't need top of the line equipment.. but when the woods is your home 80% of the time.. it makes things much nicer. Note that high end does not neccessarily mean high price. You can find some good deals on stuff through ebay. I got a 2 man USMC combat tent for my friend.. they sell them regularly.. it's got a fly that comes to the ground, built for conditions from the jungle to the arctic.. and it handles any weather like a champ.. and only for $120. I've seen similar tents going for 500 and up.

Bottom line in my opinion is that gear makes a difference. If you're only going camping for a couple days every few months or so.. you don't need anything special. But if it's a full time hobby and you plan on living that way, get the good shit.

hehe but isnt that what rich kids do and besides they're spendin thier parent's money not mine, but i get your point about expensive gear.

i started out on the walmart/target stuff, but once i really got into backpacking and camping regularly (probly atleast 2-3 weekends a month at the peak of it) i was glad i upgraded my tent and pack.

I prefer primitive camping, also am fairly poor, campmor is a good source, I used to get these campmor catologues when I was younger and would lust after camping gear. now adays I get a lot of pleasure out of trying to do things asprimitive as possible, wool blankets have always been my favorite, I am not a rich kid, no way no how, wool blankets are cheap from surplus stores, thwy keep you warm even in wet weather.

I love being a human because i can feel the psychological damage of people even when reading their words from hundreds of miles away. And they can feel mine right now. We are all huddled under the same tarp of pain and misery. Brand Name and well known to be cheap name tents are all the same. They will all give us brief shelter as we sit in them, waiting for life to happen. I may spend 250$ on a tent, and I may spend it on pot, and I may give it to terrorists, or children, or i may make an oregami salmon and feed it to a bear. We attach emotions to our money and it becomes alive. Before we encounter it, it is not real, as is nothing I am saying nor what you are reading. So lets all enjoy it. We'll probably never find a website on the planet with more like-minded people than us, and here we are arguing about who is rich, poor, right, wrong, better, worse, pious, prosperous, alive, dead.
Disregard my stream of consciousness, i vent like a vent sometimes.
