if you have a moral objection to it dont do it! it is a learning experience though. i went to a trade school and majord in arbor culture (forestry) i had to behead and gut and skin a chicken to graduate! why i have no idea!
You may be part of a team which disects the cadaver, so you do not have to make the incision yourself; but can observe. Disection is a good experience. You will see how the construction of the frog is similar to a person or is diferent. The frog is not endangered, so please do not focus on its destiny. The nastiest thing about it is the persivative formaldhyde in which the forg is kept. Its got a nasty smell. Please come back to post on your experience.
i hated the whole dissection thing so i had my partner do the entire thing...im a vegetarian so im against killing of animals..i dont think that we should kill animals just so kids can play with its insides..if the animal died naturaly however i think its ok because we didnt kill it just to be poked at..peace
Are you serious, how can they even attempt a "live disection" there will be to much blood in the way to view anything at all educational, plus that has to be illegal. How exactly do they go about killing the creature, if they even do? That is the most disturbing thing I've heard all day. I'm a fully disgusted. Somebody tell me if this is at all valid...
im not sure what im going to do yet, im probably going to have to do it, but that doesnt mean i support it. I guess i will just get it over with. i'll tell you how it goes later
How dare you question my word! A live dissection isn't exactly what it sounds like. Basically you have a frog (for example) and you'd have to pin it down on it's back, stick a probe into its neck and break its neck to kill it. Then you cut it open as fast as you can so you can see the heart still pumping blood, the digestive track working still...etc. We did it with termites to view how they digest wood, then we pulled out their gut, opened it and tested for various bacterium. Of course in termites you don't break the neck, you just pull the entire thing off.
I didnt have to do it, I just got to copy the answers out of the book and any thing that wanst in the book I got to copy off some one who did the lab, We did frog, grasshopper and worm. Next year in bio 12 its like deer head, featus pig and something else. Dont plan on doing those either
man if they'd have made me do a rat, I would have gone ballistic.....I have a pet rat named Damien. At my school, we were supposed to dissect a cat but our school but we didn't have the funding thank god.
Everything is born to die but not at the hand of another. it should be a self inflicted or natural death.
Notify PETA and other animal rights of your situation. They're in a position to put some pressure on your school administration and to publicize you're situation.
Its your moral right to object..if you feel uncomfortable doing it, dont! you may have to pay the price in grades or whatever..but 20 years down the road youll be glad you took a stand.. Cochise
OK, I'm a PhD biologist. I have been involved in many experiments on live animals. When I have the choice I choose to be involved in research that doesn't involve the direct animal work. I do see the benefits of animal research, however, I see first hand, the unnecessary waste of animals by careless planning during these experiments. I also think that they could dispense with using so many animals in high-schools. I think it is a good learning experience to actually SEE what is going on inside, but a good display model could serve that purpose. I have taught many lab classes and agree that your teachers should be more sensitive. Maybe they think that you are just being lazy or trying to get out of doing work. I think there may be a fine line between apropriate encouragement, by the teacher, for the student to try something new or that they may be a little reluctant to do at first versus being totally insensitive and forcing the student to do something they feel very strongly against. My advice: convince the teacher that you are not being lazy and really want to learn, but have a strong objection to the use of so many animals. Suggest they put you with a partner or in a group to minimize the number of animals disected. Give them time to think about your objection, they may seem stubborn at first but may come around. Also, try to have this conversation with your teacher outside of regular classtime.
