why do people who arent vegetarian bug us vegetarians? we arent doing ANYTHING to annoy them. i mean, sure, there are some in-yor-face people (like PETA) who annoy the living hell out of some people... but shit, WE ARENT ALL LIKE THAT. and it's not always that.. there's just people who hate the fact that there's vegetarians in the world. why do they have to question everything we do? or, they can question it, but then after they find out why we are veg, why do they mock us and look down on us? they are like "your not changing the world for the better." and "veggetarians are stupid! fuck the animals!" this is hurtful AND makes me mad.

shitty people suck and arent worth your time. Don't give them the satisfaction of angering you.

With that said, everything you said can just as easily be reversed to an anti-omni post.

Yeah, but omnis are the minions of satan who deserve to be locked in a small room with Michael Jackson and a tub of lube.

'rainbowcat', the reason non-veggies bother you is because you make idiotic posts calling for animals you 'wuv' and think are cute to be saved. I respect vegetarians, but I don't respect people who try to impose their personal moral views on others. Seal hunters have families to feed, as do farmers. You have a right to your opinion, and they have a right to their livelihood.

Learn to live with difference! We don't all agree on everything.

Take a leaf out of your own book, jim. If you don't like to read the opinions of veggies, then don't hang out in veggie forums. If someone was pushing their veggie views in your face in an omni forum, I'd say you had the right to be pissed. You've got no fucking right to complain about veggies expressing their points of view in a veggie forum though. As you so rightly say, the world is full of different points of view that we have to learn to tolerate. If you don't agree with the views expressed in this forum, then you know where the door is. Don't expect people to refrain from expressing their views in a veggie forum just because you don't agree with them. Nobody's forcing you to be here.

Oh, absolutely. I'd never complain about what goes down in this forum, for the reasons you give. The post I was talking about was in 'protest' - go and have a look. I just noticed this post here, and thought i'd give some insight into why omnis sometimes find some veggies a little... preachy, shall we say? ;-P

But yeah, you're dead right; veggies don't tend to come into hunting forums and slag us off, so I wouldn't do the same to you guys in your own space. But when people make idiotic statements in public, they should expect to be called on it!

Oh, I agree absolutely. If veggies wanna attack you on your own ground, you have a right to complain about it. In fairness though, the vast majority of veggies that I know don't preach at all and only express their views when specifically asked. In fact, I work with a number of veggies who I didn't even know were veggies for a long time.

Indeed. One of my good freinds from uni is a veggie, and I only found out after knowing him for a year, and only then because his housmates were complaining that he's too hard to cook for! Of course if you ask him about it, he'll robustly defend his position.

By the way, while I'm listening to it, everyone should go to bbc.co.uk and listen to this week's 'In our time'; it's fantastic!

I quite often listen to 'In Our Time' on the radio on the way to work. Depends on my shifts though. What was the subject of this one?

Beauty and aesthetics - whether beauty is inherent in things, or purely a human reaction, or a human reaction to some inherent quality. They talked a lot about Kant, and disclosed a bit of Neitzche that I'd never known before, but that exactly mirrors my world-view - 'amor fati'.

It's very hard to find philosophy that has some kind of meaning for real people, but in my opinion IOT is one of the best ways to get it - I've heard a lot of things that have really made me think on that programme. Maybe you and I should volunteer to go on it, and discuss the morality of meat! I think that'd be a classic ;-P

gah i know exactly what you mean... It's calmed down a bit since I've been veg for a while, but the first couple years, I would just sit down and eat my veg food and my dad, friends, and boyfriends would always verbally attack me about it. Or say stupid things like "mmmm DEAD COW, YUM...MOOO MOOO!" and I was never verbally attacking them about eating meat...
What's weird though, is now some of what I believe has rubbed off on those same people that used to give me shit... My dad doesn't like to hunt anymore, and he chooses salads over steak, etc...my boyfriend has opened up his mind a bit and started trying some of my vegan food, and now my mom's even thinking about going vegan [for health reasons though, she has high cholestrol] So... maybe after awhile these stupid people will wise up a bit...or at least begin to leave you alone if nothing else.

I have a theory that applies to everyone. In any debate, anyone who sinks to rage (like "MOO MOO YUM COW" and "vegetarians are stupid! fuck the animals") is expressing his/her own insecurity. These people are not confident enough in their own beliefs to accomodate opposition.

It applies to in-your-face-vegetarians, too. We all know they can get downright idiotic. But oh well, that's human nature. Not many people can keep their cool.[IMG]

I had a great argument with my mother yesterday about why I am a vegetarian (yeah, they keep on asking me the same question, maybe they think I'll grow tired of answering and will stop being a veggie, hehe). I calmly explained her once again my convictions, but she kept saying I was insane. I was starting to lose my patience when I asked her if she would be able to put between her knees a chicken, feel the warmth of the animal's body, feel her heart beating, and violently squeeze her neck till she died and then eat the corpse. She was silent for a while and then she admitted she would never do that. So, I told her that just because she hadn't killed with her own hands the animal she was eating, she was still responsable for its death.
I know she won't become a vegetarian but at least I hope she now understands why I have. :)
So, this is my advice, whenever meat-eaters ask you why you are a veggie or make fun of you, clamly explain your convictions. I know many times they will not listen to you, but maybe they once will and they'll stop bothering you, and who knows, perhaps they will even become veggies too.

my brother and father were exactly the same for so long...eventually my father (while slightly intoxicated) admitted that he only made fun of my because he envied me, and he didn't feel that he had the control to do the same. Usually it's jealousy for the fact that we can control what we eat and still remain healthy
