that when a woman is nursing, if she hears any baby cry, her breasts will immediatly start to leak?

I don't know, I just heard that somewere. If it's true, subway rides must be awfully uncomfortable. Lol.

    Some do, some don't.

I still have a phantom letdown when I hear a baby cry, and my last one has not been nursing for 3 years.

It can happen, but most of the time that doesn't happen. When her breasts are full a number of things could make the milk "let down" Some women this happens to a lot,but a lot of women don't have it happen at all.

A friend of mine started "leaking" as soon as she just thought or talked about nursing.

I leak like a sieve, and I don't leak when I hear crying. But I did leak when I would HOLD babies, and like Brighid, I have "phantom letdowns" when I hold babies now sometimes. More if they try to nuzzle me (and babies are always trying to nuzzle my breasts, I must be a Univeral Mother or something. :D )

But some mothers do let down when they hear crying, it may be hormones or a conditioned response or both.

:D that happened to me and it made me laugh!! When I was in the hospital it happened...so weird and spooky!!!

it didn't last long...after hospital my munchkin was the only one I was around for a bit and the next time I was hanging out with crying bubbas nothing happened despite me still breastfeeding...nothing physically that is...my mind kept going though and all I could think was would you please stick that baby on your boosie before I come over and put it on for you!!

Oh, yeah, steph. I've been tempted to pick up and nurse crying babies in public, too. The "car seat" babies, who sit in the car seat, in the grocery store and just WAIL, while Mama tried fruitlessly to jam the paci in the kid's mouth, or worse, just ignores it and carries on what she is dong. (Must not be "time" for a feeding yet :$ ) Damn, Mama pick that baby up and FEED him!!!! (My personal "favorite" is a poor baby wailing in the car seat, while Mama ignores the baby, and shops and talks on the damn cell phone..............:( )

Oh! Phantom letdown is when you get that tingle just like real let down, and you have to check your shirt cause it totally feels the same, only there's no milk there, haha, i get them too when my "babies" are upset. Never around other kids though, haha, i must be heartless :p Sometimes i think about my little ones, and i'll get it too, especially now that i'm pregnant, because apparently my body remembers how to do that, hahaha!

I still get the tingle on occasion... and mine is 13...YEARS old.
I t seems to happen around kids with a similar pitch... We get trained so easily.
Mind you, the right voice saying "mama!" in a store will turn my head.

A letdown or Milk Ejection Reflex, is when the breast releases milk into the ductal system and then ejects it through the nipple. In many womyn it is accompanied by a tingling, pulling or warming sensation. It is governed by the hormone Oxytocin, which is also resposnible for childbirth contractions, and orgasm.

MER is also accompanied, in a lactating mother, by milk synthesis, which uses the hormone Prolactin. Prolactin also is responsible for bonding, protective feelings and making tears in the tear ducts in the eyes, among other things. (Which is one of the reasons you cry at Mr Rogers and AT&T commercials when you are pregnant and lactating. ;) )
