I have no idea, do you? Except it was a traditional Jamaican song where the band was fucked when they recorded.
The Kingsmen's cover of the song apparently had "obscenities" in it. They were even visited by the FBI.

It was because the way it was sung.... like a drunken sailor givin head. The lyrics where not understood well and kids started making up lyrics. Then when parent's and elders over heard them they freeked. It was all due to stupidity.
"i left my load, uh, in her hair" actually in the kingsmen version i think its at about 1:58 into the song the drummer stuffs up and yells an obscenity that once you know its there stands out really clearly...
"I smelt the rose in her hair" or something like that, im not sure. But radio stations interpreted it to be something about a boner in her hair.
Yeah, I've read the lyrics to the actual origins, a Carribean Sailors folk tune published, but the Kingsman sounded completely overripe when they did it & besides the guy yelling fuck in the background, I think it was the leadsinger's adapted version. I've hear accounts of the complete song both ways & it's hard to tell the difference. I think they did several tracks in the studio & probably slipped this one in at the last minute just to see if they could get away with it. It was shocking for that time. Rap has been doing that, masking words like mofo & stuff & successfully getting away with it because it is race music & people are afraid to say anything against it. But when Bill Cosby, a black man says it's shit, they call him a cracker, Oreo or whatever. He was just speakin his mind, same as they are. But the words to the original version are innocuous on paper. But my friends & I used to do that with songs when playing when we got drunk. I think this was an actual sailor version that they recorded, similar to what lonely Sailors longing for Port would be singing when they were as drunk or high as kites. They managed to slip it past the censors

I don't think there was ever any conclusion about it. It created no small controversy. I think they pulled it for a while & then brought it back because the lyrics were so obscurely obscene. And maybe sometimes obscenity just originates in our 'dirty minds', which is why Censors seem so lame sometimes. Because "If you peep through a hole in a wall you will see at last that which does offend". I think that is a job where they are as Zappa put it, "The Brain Police." You get into that frame of mind where you are looking for something wrong & so you start to see it everywhere. But I think it's good to protect children & the elderly from hearing some stuff. We have a hard time explaining some stuff on TV to my mom. We were all raised during the days of freedom of expression but at home sex was never a topic. FBI's J.
