I have always been a Howard backer, but how can he say "we must have faith in the Indonesian Legal system" when Bashir gets 3 years for being complicit in the Bali bombing and Shapelle Corby gets 20 years. Where is the justice in that ?
i dont think looking like cockheads really matters when this is an innocent persons life at stake. jesus hasnt she gone through enough already? its fucking bullshit shes the only victim in the whole thing, well apart from whoever actually owned the mj coz they woulda lost money but is anyone supposed to believe that its fair. its like going over to a friends place and their parents frisk you and find marijuana and lock you in the garage and your parents trying to explain to the rest of the family that we have to trust the system of whoever locked up. bullshit
Yeah, when i heard him say that about trusting the Indonesians i almost choked. She was stuffed from the start, there was no way they were going to let her off and it's about time Howard stopped kissing arse. I used to vote for him but as time has gone on i'm going more off him. I can't have any respect for him when he says things like that. It's like choosing them over us in a way.
We have no right to decide what goes on in other countries court systems... think about this... Suppose it was an indonesian lady holidaying in Australia... at customs, she is found with loads of weed... would we believe her, or would we lock her up? If shapelle was a guy, this emotional response in the media and all this sensationalism wouldnt have happened. Yes, I agree, she is a victim here... but you take risks when you go overseas, especially to somewhere where westeners are percieved to be evil. Reguardless of whether she meant to or not, under indonesian law, she has broken it. Their laws do not take into acount intent, or reasonable doubt, and there is no doubt that she has broken their laws. If the indonesian government, which is really only just finding its feet, was to take a light handed approach with this, what faith does that give its own people in their justice system, and what message does that send out to the rest of the world? "We'll go easy on you if youre an attractive teary western girl?" No they shouldnt back down, and we shouldnt push them, its only widening the gap between us and them... sure we should try and get her home, nbut only after this ridiculously intense media attention dies down
If it was reversed, the person here would've gotten a fair trial hopefully. That's the way our system works. You're innocent until proven guilty. Over there, you're guilty until proven innocent.
but who are we to decide what the rest of the worlds courts should be doing. Do you really feel that you are high enough authority to profess what is truly just... I know I dont
It is enough to put me off having a stop over flying on the Kangeroo route. The food on Guruda Airlines is nothing short of shocking anyway. Maybe Shapelle will get a pardon one day.It costs the indonesian government a fair amount of money to incarcerate her, something they do not have a great deal of.
It's not that i think i have the authority. It's plain fairness, it's obvious what is humanely right and wrong and when someone's right's are being stomped on.
well we are people we share a similarity with schappelle corby that we're all people and shes australian and who are THEY to lock her up? i suppose its ok for saddam to kill thousands of his own people because he's doing it in his own country
So that also means it was okay for howard, bush and blair to go in and bomb the hell out of everything in Iraq because they believed their political system was unjust. And it was okay for Osama to organise the world trade centre attacks because americans are doing evil.
Even though people choose to travel to these countries I think Australian courts should take on Australian people's cases. I know it's never gonna happen but thats how it should be. If she WAS set up, and it was out of her control its just simply not fair. The least us Aussies should have is the security and safety of knowing our country is on our side or at least in control of our fate. and that its not in the hands of aussie-hating terrorists!
Oh my god, lets incite some hate huh? This is all lame ass, racist, western supremesist bullshit. We would be at huge fault to believe for one second that we are more moralistic than the rest of the world
There was a mexican woman who was carrying 15 kilos of marijiuana, more than Corby and she got 7 years. People hate us and we are that country biggest tourist entity. Go bloody figure.
I'd feel the way i do if they were white. They made the wrong decision by moral/humane standards. They don't believe in fairness, treat others who have done worse far better. If anyone is a racist it's the Indonesians.
the punishment does not fit the crime. regardless of what their laws take into consideration. this isnt a question of which legal system is superior or a question of soverignity. she's got to spend 20 years in a hell hole of a prison, conditions that are not suitable for any type of punishment. i see this more of a human rights violation. legal procedures were not even conducted properly, her luggage was mishandled and not even investiagted in a fair and impartial manner. even if she is guilty, shes going to spend a very nearly life sentence in a five meter wide cell with seven other women for a sentence that is questionably unvalid. aussie's PM has got to step up about this
ARGH! If he steps in there is no helping her. The indonesian government will not be pressured by our little pm... and why should they. Everyone keeps on about what is fair and just, but this is only an australian version of what is fair and just, according to many indonesians, she got off light. "buy the ticket, take the ride"
well that ignores what i said, but ok. Do you think she got a fair trial? Everything about the case reeks. Her fingerprints were nto found on the drugs.. and who would be stupid enough to smuggle drugs from Oz to indonesia, where the value is meaningless? the judge said corby didnt do enough to 'prove her innocence.' This is not a fair trial.. so i ask again, does australia not believe in inalienable rights?
