He's from the Grateful Dead, right? I don't know any of their music but I'm sure I would really enjoy this book, since it was the account of an actual band member.
I have not read it myself, but my assistant editor, who is as much a deadhead and bookoholic as myself says it is well worth the read. Phil like to use large and obscure words to prove he is smart, so if you don't read a huge range, you might want a dictionary nearby. David (AE) said one of the best sections is Phil discussing the night before his liver transplant, and knowing the risk involved, what went through his mind knowing he might not survive.
He had a liver transplant? OMG... I'm assuming it was from living the "good life" too much? I guess Pigpen would've had one too if he was still alive. Those 60s rockers fucked themselves right up didn't they. One of my fave music bios is "Papa John" by John Phillips, so I really must get my hands on this book.
i think phil had a liver transplant because of hepatitus, and his alchohol consumption made it worse. i could be wrong, i remember hearing that some time ago.
I got it from the library a few days ago...it's good so far. There are some pretty hilarious stories...
Phil had the transplant in Dec., 1998. Hep C. He missed New Years at the Kaiser because he was recouping. Signed your organ donor card? Are you on the registry?
I loved his court testimony on Court TV during the Garcia estate lawsuit. This quote is close, if not exact: "I don't remember. It's all one big smoky haze." But he was just resisting being dragged into the middle of it.
