I have tried meditation so many times but I just can't relax (unless Im stoned) I've tried music, body tightening teqniques, breathing etc.. I have anxiety constantly.. not often attacks anymore but Im trying really everything to meditate or just relax! Any of you got any ideas or have a similar problem?
Entering a meditative state of mind isn't as easy as most people believe. It takes just a little practice each day. If you have ideas and thoughts floating through your head just let them float! Over time these thoughts will disapper...example...today I had "I smell a rat" by The White Stripes playing over and over in my head but I just went along with it. Also if you meditate or even sleep in a cluddered space it will mess up your natural energies. There are so many factors in just relaxing in general that have to be put into perspective. I don't think I was that much help but maybe you found something that did help you out. Good Luck!
I have actually thought about making my bedroom really peaceful and not packed with stuff and decorations..but I just love decorating to much to do it! I need another room!
well, meditating is actually just like sleeping. or, more like almost falling a sleep. try to meditate when you just woke up. try to concentrate on the middle of your body, your 'heart'. ofcourse your butt is gonna itch, and you hear the neighbours and that kinda stuff, but each time you notice that you say to yourself; go to your heart. meditating doesnt have to be silent, try to say the same verse of songlyrics that you love for 20 minutes over and over again in the same way. or try to make the same movement over and over again [kinda like rockin' a baby]. it is really hard, not easy at all. i know...i study it...:/
Don't expect any results, at all. If you're tense you need to chill out, when you try meditating you slow your life right down, and the feelings of tension and probably restlessness come with that. I would suggest that you don't try meditating just yet, or if you do, make it VERY VERY VERY light - literally, if your too restless to do more than a minute, don't do more than a minute. And don't even bother with complex techniques, or worse, simple techniques. Just literally sit still for 1 minute, don't try anything more than that, if you can become aware of whatever is going on internally (that was EXTREMELY general for a very good reason). When I say become aware, I don't mean you have to know exactly what's going on, just that something is going on. That's it. Don't extend your time above a limit that you don't think you can manage and if you do push your upper range don't be amazingly strict about keeping to it, you'll just stress yourself out, which would defeat the point entirely. By the sounds of it you are (just being blunt) quite uptight. You'll probably find you have some quite uptight attitudes to somethings which get you stressed. Either that or you are living faster than you can deal with, in which case just chill out and slow things down. Start noticing when you become stressed and when it reaches that point just step back and cool down. Until you are generally a little bit more relaxed I think meditation is a bit of a long shot at the moment. Blessings Sebbi
I find music is the best form of meditation. For me it's loud rock music. People think i'm weird but i find ACDC very relaxing, anything with great guitar work
Hehe, you have tons of different suggestions to try now! I love how amazingly different everybody's advice can be, but none of it is wrong. My suggestion... Don't even try yet. As humans we're all so rebellious. If you tell yourself to sit and reach some kind of 'inner calm', you will more than likely do exactly the opposite. It is like telling an overactive child to sit still and quietly - they will be as far from at peace as is possible and will be fidgety and uncomfortable. I suggest that you let everything out first before you sit down and try to meditate. Put some chaotic music on as loud as you like and jump, leap, dance, be crazy! Let your body go... Just do exactly what feels best - yell, sing, gibber, scream, shout... Whatever, just let go for as long as possible. Usually i stand and breathe in a completley chaotic way for ten minutes, after about five minutes allowing every part of my body to move with my breath. I then start to move wildly - surge aroun my room, punch the matress, throw pillows against the wall etc. I sort of start tribally dancing and yelling from the depths of my stomach. My heart rate really goes up and i am normally really tired after this, but amazingly energised at the same time! That 'craziness' should last for at least 15 minutes really... I then just lay down in a comfortable position and invite calm into my body. Here is a lovely time to practice your meditation. When you have energised all of your cells by such a lot of activity, it is really beneficial to lay down - this brings all the chakras to the same level as each other and allows the energy to flow equally to each. This really enhances mediation. A similar technique to this is used in 'shamanic trance dancing' - the dancing lasts about an hour and a half, and then the laying down afterwards is an absolutely amazing experience! I tried shamanic trance dance for the first time on the weekend. During the laying down part i had some amazing visions. What i've described just acts as a sort of catharsis for you. It puts your mind much more at peace because you are not suppressing any chaos underneath. Once you have let the beast out of the room, it is much easier to relax... Hmm, i hope that makes sense! Where the hell has Faith No More gone? Their version of Easy was one of my fave's, beats Lionel Richie's to dust
Sunshine Lily - I like the way you think. I only discovered what meditation was all about when I stopped bothering with it. I believe that meditative states should come naturally and forcing them is like going to an orchid before the apples are in season and screaming at your nearest apple to ripen. The results of meditation come not from the actual techniques themselves but the mindset achieved through them. That's why I'm constantly here advising people away from conventional medititation and rather following their gut instinct and doing something they love. Any artist or athlete or whatever else you care to add to my examples will be able to tell you exactly what it's like being in a meditative state, they just probably won't call it that. I hate to be finally saying this but I have a thoery that, despite it's originally pure routes and pure intentions of those who spread it, a heck of a lot of meditation these days is just part of the latest fitness fad. At least that seems to be the mentality of a lot of people who seem to try it. Generally the same ones who struggle for results. I keep on saying, forget sitting still go and do something you love, if your into Taoism at all that would certainly make a lot more sense than it may already. You're right, we all have rebellious spirits (we all saw Star Wars yeah? The good guys were the rebels, I grew up on that idea of rebellion. Okay, only joking... well to an extent, I think those films did affect my mindset to be perfectly honest. I'm digressing.) Yeah, we have rebellious spirits. I can't help but be pessimistic about our world and yet I believe that if we pull together and do something about it we can live in as close to uptopia we can get. Maybe not in our lifetimes but hey, we've got to start somewhere, get the ball rolling. I seriously believe that if everyone decided to go against what they think it expected of them and maybe risk their financial situation a bit then the world will become an infinately better place. I'm an artist (musician) but I want to change the world - the Dalai Lama said "For me, no other art form expresses our yearning for harmony than music" and I'm agreeing with it. Well, maybe not the bit about music being better at it but the rest of it I agree with. I guess that's probably my purpose as an artist, to call people to arms (and legs) to question whether we are living in an imperfect world and if there is anything we can do about it. I should make that my job title "Rebel Alliance promotion worker". (Going back to fads are you thinking the same thing as me - if we set up a website, put some ads in the local newpaper that will probably end up as a "religion" or similar. Oh dear I should really try that out). Blessings Sebbi
