I started studying chord theory a couple days ago, and there's only one thing that confuses me... How come, in augmented and diminished chords, all the notes can be considered the root note, making the fingering for E+, C+, and G#+ be the exact same, same with Adim, Cdim, D#dim, and F#dim, etc etc....? I don't get it. Not that I have a problem with the chords, I just don't get why this is so.
You're right on the money. There's no difference between a E+, C+ and G#+. Isn't that wacky? Well, I've been told the difference is what's played in the bass. If the bass is on E, then your chord is a E+ (unless you wanna be an ass and call it a C+/E ). What's really wacky is the minor diminished 7 chord (I call it the "demolished"). You've probably figured it out already... there are only 4 of em, but they masquerade under 12 different names. AaaaRRrrghH!
yeah they're just the same because they're all built from the same thirds. just plunk two major thirds together and repeat from any of the three notes and you've got the same chord that made no fuckin sense did it lol
basically an augmented/diminnished chord is a chord with the 4th or 5th raised/lowered a half step. if your wondering about the chord nonsense then look up chord inversions...its way too complicated to explain here.
