I avoid using racial slurs. I personally don't feel right using them. I suppose I feel uncomfortable because when I was a child, I was absolutely FORBIDDEN to refer to others by those names, so that lesson kind of stuck with me. But that's just how I feel.

Prejudiced words annoy the hell outta me. If it's just friends, then sure, as long as no one is too irked by it, it's pretty much ok... but if others are listening (ex. at school or some other public place) it may be hurtful, or just plain annoying, to the people overhearing. If I were to count how many times I've heard nigga, cracker, gay, faggot, and other like terms used in foul context today alone, I'd have a huge list! But dispite that, my school is semi-accepting. My city just has a largely diverse population in terms of ethnicity, and there are plenty of people willing to give you a good, hard kick in the rear if you truly are a racist.

However, on the contrary, many people are still adjusting to the idea of non-hetrosexuality. I'm pretty openly bi... I don't flaunt it or anything, just if somone asks or just assumes I'm hetro I'll tell them. However, there have been a few girls who started acting a bit differently around me after finding out that I'm bi. It really annoys me that they treat me differently because of who I am, and I've told them that I don't go for straight women. Also I hate hearing people say "Thats so gay!" all the time... to counterstrike them I've taken to saying "Thats so straight!", not reallyto dis straight people, but to show peoplw that saying "Thats so gay" is stupid. I get a lot of odd looks, yet its a good conversation/debate starter.

I think it begins at home. I teach my kids not to use those kinds of words and openly discuss the kinds of thoughts behind those words. I'm not saying all racists had racist parents but I think maybe their parents never made any effort to teach them it was wrong. And is it wrong to hate all ignorant racists,or are we then dehumanizing them based on one trait and not taking them as whole complex human beings? Can't bring love through hate. The world is a real tricky place, man.

Words hurt. Period. I'm not going to argue with anyone about that.

There's nothing cool or funny about using certain words. If you think it's cool or funny to use them, you're pretty stupid. If your friends use those words or laugh when you use them, go out and find yourself some new friends.

prejudiced words... pfffff. Words are words. You can take them however you want. If you want to go through life looking for things to get offended about, then good for you. But don't act all pissed off when you find what you're looking for!

Y'know, there are two main schools of thought on this. One is to use them and strip them of their power. Lenny Bruce tried this.
The other is to let the words die off.
In a culture with so much recorded history, letting words die is harder.
I think that the groups using the words for themselves can be perpetuating a self-hate (like you said).
One thing I have learned is you have to love yourself some because no one else really will.
As long as some people use words as weapons, slurs will exist.
The words do not cause the hate, but they do represent it.
We need to go beyond the need to be hateful or belittling and evolve consciously into acceptance.

From what I see, liberal use of slurs, ethnic and sexual, has not brought a great change in thought.
Their power to hurt is not being diminished, but perhaps their history is diminishing.
I would love to tell my great grand children that once upon a time and long ago people used hateful, hurtful words...and the kids not believe me.
peace to you, Joker...and don't forget to laugh at the Cosmic Joke we are in.

you need better friends! Racism is a core value. It can be unlearned, but it is usually so ingrained that life away from it is always having slips.

Anyone know the They Might Be Giants song "Racist Friend?" its a letter explaining why somone is no longer hanging out with an old bud.
