well, grunge is long dead. there was nothing more ridiculous than a so-called counter culture movement intent on expressing the indivuality of generation x through safety in numbers, mass-production of flannels and docs, and lollapalooza. never was a counter-culture movement so well marketed.

Agreed, but it wasn't always like that. Hell, even the hippie movement got commercialized after a while. Some of us believe in the ideals of the music, not the ideals of anyone else. And, yes, grunge is long dead. But so is the revolution, and that doesn't stop people here.

Edit: What it is, it never was. Those that don't get it will never understand. The 90s alt. movement was not about Generation X, it was not about being poor, it was not about being dirty, it was not about being a counter-culture. It was about the music. The amazing thing about the 90s alt. movement is what was also wonderful about the acid rock movement: No two bands sounded alike. If you listen to The Doors and The Rolling Stones, there is a distinct difference. If you listen to Jane's Addiction and Pearl Jam, there is a distinct difference. The two greatest movements for music were the acid rock movement and the alternative movement.

You only saw the flannels, the boots, the dirt, and MTV because you never took the time to be a part of it. If you had, you would've realized these were real people, and it was a real movement.

Now, yes, it did get commercialzed. But some of us really don't give a fuck about that, because we know we're the real deal. Why should we give a fuck about MTV? We don't need it, we know what we're doing.

man, you're 16. the 90's weren't that great. they've been immortalized like the 60's were. having actually been the poor kid in the neighborhood who had always shopped in thrift stores and went her own way and bought and enjoyed the music (except nirvana, they always irritated me), seeing the hyper-commercialization of the whole thing was disgusting. hearing nirvana played continuously for 4 years, while completely ignoring the other bands who were actually striving for some originality in favor of those who strove to be nirvana was heartbreaking. i had to turn off my beloved radio for almost 10 years before anything interesting happened again. so don't preach to the choir about "real people," as soon as nirvana broke the grunge scene, grunge was over, and so was the power of the 90's.

Nirvana didn't kill grunge they just accidentally drug it into the mainstream kicking and screaming.

But "grunge" is only dead to the mainstream. Because the main stream has to constantly change to keep people happy. Grunge had its 15 minutes of fame and then it was done.

And I'm sorry but Nirvana has been the most recent interesting thing to happen to music.

Sex Pistols were interesting too. Even though they weren't very good.

Yes but the Sex Pistols are older than Nirvana. So I still stick with Nirvana being the most recent. I mean they were the voice of the generation. There aren't any bands out there now speaking for me.

You don't know whats so special about Nirvana? Did you hear the so called music before thay came out? It sucked, they started a revolution. The broke into the mainstream dragging GOOD bands with them. Before them it was all hip hop and Micheal Jackson and Garth Brooks.

I said it once and I'll say it again Nirvana was the voice of the generation!

Whats so great is besides they were the best band ever is they lead a revolution. Not many bands do that. Elvis, The Beatles and Nirvana.

Nirvana isn't the voice of me, much less most others I know.

And Michael Jackson's old stuff is awesome. Thriller is one of my favorites. And, yes, I've heard the stuff before them, in the 80s. Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Joe Jackson, etc., etc. The 80s had some damn great music. And most of the early metal bands were good as well.

And Nirvana didn't start the alternative movement. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time. With bands like R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Smashing Pumpkins celebrating amazing success in the late 80s and early 90s (all of them were established bands and put out great selling albums before Nevermind came out, Nirvana popped up and did what I think should've been expected of them, possibly more than expected.

I cannot deny what they did for the movement. However, they are over-rated.

I am going out on a limb here and going to say you are 26 years old....that would have made you 14 when Teen Spirit hit. when I was that age I was searching the anals of 80's punk and trying to not listen to anything that the media shoved down my throat. Like I said I liked Nirvana, but I saw nothing special about them. try not to get so threatened or offended when the entire world does not say to you 'YES, YOU ARE CORRECT, I WANNA BE YOU!!!!!!"

Janes Addiction were a better band anyway.

Nirvana became famous once they were noticed opening for Sonic Youth. Who remembers Sonic Youth? No one and they just put a new album out. Sonic Youth doesn't sound any different then punk bands do today.

So yeah right place right time but all there prestiege is well deserved. Sorry the Smashing Pumpkins sucked and still do. Mudhoney is my second favorite band and the media definatly didn't shove that down my throat. Sorry guys I hate the 80's. I hate metal. The punk was good I love Billy Idol, Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc.

I just think Nirvana changed music for the better at the time. Oh well.
