Someone has hijacked my yahoo account (my email/messenger) I've had this same account for a long long time (years) and have many friends on my messenger account/email that I don't have any other way to get in touch with. I'm getting so frustrated. I checked my email the other day and had a notice of confirmation that my password has been changed and I thought that was strange because I hadn't changed my password, so I tried to get it and I couldn't w/o the new password and my account information had been changed too....grrrrr.... So now I can't even get into anything because whoever did this changed all my stuff and I got onto my mom's messenger account and checked out my profile thing on there and it had been completely changed into very dirty stuff (like for my favorite quote it now says "nice shoes, wanna fuck?" Man I'm soooo pissed, this sucks~~ I have so many personal emails/such that I've had saved on there and wonderful people that I just had their email addresses saved and now I have nothing/no way of getting in touch with them. Well I was wondering does anyone know how to do anything about this? Yahoo is no help at all because of their privacy agreement or what have you/I can't get in contact with anyone personally. I want my account back! please please please help me someone :(

i think the best you can hope for is to request the password be sent to the email that the account was registered to.

otherwise, you really can't prove that it's your account.

last resort, get a new yahoo account, and IM your old name if the person is ever on. could ask that they please give you your account back.

Yea, try using there "Lost password?" feature, maby you can get your password reset to your email, unless yahoo allows the user to change there accounts email address...then your out of luck :(

Amber, you might want to consider who the person is that hijacked your account, and what their intentions are. One scenario is that is just a ‘friend’ who watched you type in your password or ran a key logging program to capture it. They may be doing this as a practical joke (as show by the change of quote), and hopefully once the jokes over you’ll get your account back.

If you had a relatively simple password, like a single basic word, then your account may have been stolen by a thief in massive brute force attack. The scammer just takes a list of thousands of yahoo account names, and a dictionary of common passwords then has a little program try random combination of user/password, recording the successful pairs.

In this scenario the attacker is either script kiddy just out to ruin your day or a scammer looking for personal information and an address book of close contacts.

If you suspect that your account was taken over for malicious reasons, then you should take action to protect yourself from further harm. For instance if your credit card number or banking information is available in any emails, you should contact the bank and have this account closed and get a new credit card number. The account might also have passwords to other online service, and these passwords should be changed. Finally you should warn any close email contacts that you account has been hijacked, so that the scammer can’t use you good name to harm others.

As for recovering the account I am sorry to say there really aren’t any options. Yahoo, can’t compromise their confidentiality policy, so they will not be able to intervene. The new password will likely be impossible to guess, so you won’t be able to take it back the way it was stolen. Finally Yahoo’s security is top notch, so a technical exploit could not be used to regain control.

Again, really sorry to hear about this, and hope that it is just one of your friends joking around, but you should definitely prepare for the worse.

P.S: If you conclude the account was taken by a scammer, please send me the email address. I have a program or two of my own that can wreak havoc on certain scamming practices.

if you remember even a couple of email addresses, then you could create a temporary new account, and email those people explaining what's going on with your stolen account, and ask them to spread the word. hopefully if enough of your contacts know that this account is being run by someone else, they'll know to ignore them, and might even be able to help you out (and maybe put you back in touch with your other contacts).
make sure the people you email know that your new email address is really from you, like include in the email an inside joke you have with them or something specific like that
it will be resolved, you've just gotta work out how to get round this :)

Amber, when you received the "change of password" email, did it have an IP number on the bottom? I'm not sure if it would, since they sent the email to your alternate address. But if it does, that IP number is the number of the person that changed your password. Try running a check on it,you may be able to narrow it down, because you may know the person who did this to you.

Good luck,I hope you can get your account back.
