Disco music was THE music of the 1970s- NOT Punk!. I was there so I should know!!!. Disco-Funk came out of New York & Philadelphia & capsulated the World. Disco was all about boogieing the ladies so you had to dress sharp , wear your hair long & dance brilliantly. Punk was all about Resentment of authority. No love songs came out of Punk.(Except love of protest). I'm ashamed that Britain exported so much Punk-Shit to America & the World ; whilst we imported beautiful Disco-Funk themes. The hot-headed angry & resentful Westen World of today is because Punk won & Disco lost. ............Right, I'm lying low for a few hours while u anger-heads queue up to tell me that Punk was glorious ,artistic puke.
Punk music "won" because people recognized that there were things that were wrong which needed paying attention to, which needed change, which were more important than dressing sharp, attracting the ladies, and dancing brilliantly. Because not everyone is a superficial jerk. It was crusaders who fought for change and rights, like the punks of the 70's, who made this a world of freedom and rights in which people like you could concern yourselves with nothing more than sex and dancing. You owe them your allegiance.
How is it possible for a musical genre to win or lose? The presence of both disco and punk continue to be made known, for better or worse. Disco was the direct ancestor of modern dance music/"electronica", and punk went on to influence rock and pop music and splinter into numerous micro-genres (pop-punk, OC punk, Oi, hardcore, etc.) I don't think it's fair to say that all people who liked disco are "superficial jerks" any more than to say that all punks were "crusaders who fought for change and rights"... PS: This poll is lame-- I only have these two options? How about "neither"?
They weren't a fucking group of superheroes, I really think you're exaggerating the effect of punk music. But either way, both punk and disco suck, so lets just leave it at that.
the original punk was great... all those new york and detroit bands were gods with instruments, it was the british bands who turned it into a genre of hate. punk sucks now, but disco has always sucked.
I only came to know of them a few dayd ago, but Flogging Molly wrote at least one love song (only heard five songs.)
i never liked disco to be honest i hate it, would rather be sent to hades then listen to it but whatever, thats not the point. my point is that, the whole "punk" "anarchist scene" was fucking awesome! thats what annoys me about people these days, who say bad things against punk music because 1) you make stupid ass assumptions that "there are no punk love songs" which you'll find is not true if you gave it a chance 2) they believe blink 182 is punk (im not knocking them, im just saying they are not punk) 3) you think that "hate in the western world" is because of punk? what in hell? ah no, sorry, hate in the western world today IS because of a genre of music, yeah..................................... think about it, hate didnt just show up in the 70's cause of punk, hate has been around long long long before punk the reason some people think punk sucks is today is cause they class punk as avril lavigne or sum41, which is so incorrect it makes my head bleed. there are some awesome bristish punk bands around right now! rant over. sorry no offense to anyone especially the person who started this thread cause we all got different opinions, but im passionate about punk!
who cares? i think disco was just music to groove with...have fun...it wasnt really trying to make any 'changes' but classic punk is cool i think all diff genres of music have some kind of message
Funk is great to listen to if you are working because it always has a great sound. Disco (which I think is seperate from funk) blows ass. Now Punk music...a lot of "popular" punk bands are out there and unfortuantaly they play for the radio. But true punk...music will a message is great. So many good punk bands are out there but people are more about mainstream music. Now, that is a crying shame.
I personally liked a little of both. Plus they were two different kinds of people that shared one thing in common... They liked to party and party hard! True Punk was the Ramones they were around before people started labeling them punk!
Thanks everyone for their contributions on the thread. Some have sort of agreed with me;some are vehemently opposed to my protestations & stance. I knew that Punk has it's fandom out there.I know that many feel that Disco was an abberation to musical purpose.I find that in 2005 I can better judge these two music trends of the late 1970s that had cult followings; & I believe that Disco was the better music overall. I'm not suggesting that I speak for everyone or any more authority on music than anyone else. The Poll is running 2 to 1 in favour of Punk.It doesn't come as a surprise to me. I feel that Punk is musical-aversion therapy.Disco is 'feel-good' rhythm that flows out the life-pulses of phallux-adrenellin. I remember 1976 :the year that both Disco & Punk kicked-off in Britain. 'Boogie Nights', 'I Feel Love', 'Yes,Sir,I Can Boogie','I Love Music','That's The Way I Like It': - Great Songs that I wanna hear NOW ...again.... in 2005. Not 'Pretty Vacant' & 'Looking Thru' Gary Gilmour's Eyes' . Sh**.......what's the use?........because Disco didn't kill anyone or isn't hateful of the world around us ; it is out-of -fashion in 2005. Okay ......alright....here's a photo from 1979 to cheer u up then:
I can see why you like Disco. Its feel good music, I just think its a bit lame I guess. I'm not crazy about Punk but I prefer it to Disco.
