Telling the Truth at the speed of life. (June 5, 2005)

    Can Gays Go Straight?
On May 9, 2001, Dr. Robert Spitzer released what was described by the major media* as "explosive" findings in his research of homosexuals that claimed to have changed their orientation from gay to straight. As a major proponent for the 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's list of disorders--which added to his credibility for some observers--Spitzer's press conference made waves in a greater way than it ordinarily would have. Days before the release, gay advocates were denouncing the study.**
A recent Internet-wide search on Google.com turned up coverage by major news outlets, including CNN, MSNBC and The Washington Post, featuring the story of Spitzer's research couched in highly skeptical language. They emphasized claims of tainted research and appealed, in one case, to the claim of duplicity by some ex-gays. However, they did not tell both sides and failed to report the views of even the most pro-gay people who question widely-accepted notions such as genetic causes for homosexuality. We seek to balance the information here and provide hope to those homosexuals who truly desire change.

We are brought to these questions surrounding the controversy: Do claims that so-called former homosexuals were never really homosexual hold water? Where does personal choice come into play as a causal factor of homosexual behavior, not solely a human rights cause celebre (one pro-gay ad read, "We believe everyone has the right to love whoever they choose")? Does the detailed testimony of hundreds of former homosexuals count for much (see dozens of testimonials at StonewallRevisited.com)? Are there reasons for homosexuality that go deeper than sex, and if so, how do they likely come about (e.g., is it a developmental disorder, which even reparative therapists debate)? If so, is it ethical to fail to address the condition for those who want to change? How about the therapists who engage in reparative therapy for homosexuals--are they agreed on methods of practice? What are they currently discussing on the practice and philosophy of reparative therapy? Get another perspective on this important topic in our Special Focus.

Im not reading that thing, but you really think that ex gays chose to rewire the workings of their brains? do they relly get turned on by the opposite sex, or do they just screw them? were they ever gay in the firstplace? I think it is possible to change, but not by choice. It would prolly gradually happen over time.

you dont just decide what you like. YOu like stuff based on the psycological reaction it makes you have. That would be like me saying, "every time i see a penis from now on,i will get that tingly feeling" You dont control the tingly feeling.

an exboyfriends father went from hardcore gay (darkrooms'n everything) to being a straight, born again christian with a wife and three kids.

I dunno though.. he did have a gay vibe still.. he was helping his son move one time and he was the one saying "oh my, I think I just broke a fingernail!".. .*sigh*...

People should do whatever they feel like.. but I really feel sorry for the ones who feel the heavy burdon of religion waying down on them and their 'sins'.

I think it would be hard for a true gay to come out to their family and friends.. Hard enough coming out once in your life..

oohh.. can just imagine it.. "mom, dad.. I'm gay"... and then a few years later.. "mom, dad.. now I'm straight"..

And how are they supposed to think it wasn't just a fase? hehe..

I think the gay guys who turn straight were sort of bisexual all along (aren't we all?) and they just shifted the balance. You're not gonna tell me they don't get a boner anymore from looking at a gorgeous guy once they 'decided' to turn straight.

There was an extensive study of pheremonal responses in people totally blowing that bullshit out of the water.

Sexual attraction is an obvious neruological function, you dont change who you're atracted to anymore then you change what food tastes good to you.

In a sense, being gay maybe an evolutionary advantage when a society reaches a certain population... sort of like nature evening itself out, to prevent overpopulation.

I really think the whole 'I used to be gay but now I'm straight' thing is just a big joke.

You're either gay or straight, one or the other - or maybe, just for fun, a bit of both.

I don't believe that people can be 'brainwashed' into leading a lifestyle of a different sexual oreintation. You are the way you are, quite simply. Neither is a disorder, neither is a defect in any way.

Well, I'm not about to "turn gay" any more than a gay person can just "turn straight"....this is bible belt bullshit.....haha...the BBB.

I think the "turning" is like when a priest has to be celibate in order to be a priest. And we all know what happens when priests aren't allowed to have sex.......

Denying your real feelings won't make them vanish. This isn't like going to rehab and getting off drugs.

And even if you get clean/sober you'll always be an addict.. so even if you 'turn straight' you'll always be gay ;)
