I got the cartilage of my upper ear pierced last summer (it's a ring not a stud), and it's had this bubble ever since I got it. at first I was just using tree tree oil but after a while it just made the piercing and the skin around it crusty and itchy. lately I've been using sea salts and it works for a few days, then one morning I'll wake up and it's a big ol bubble again. any advice on healing and making it go away?

What do you mean by bubble? Like infection? If so,you may be allergic to the ring. I'm allergic to some of them myself.

plain antibacterial soap like the yellow dial bar soap works really well to speed healing and get rid of infection!

It sounds like you had a blowout. Did you get pierced with a piercing gun? It is very common for ear cartilage to get all funky when pierced with a gun. Go ahead and take it out, and give it a rest for a while. You also might want to try crushing up an asprin tablet and mixing the resulting powder with a little bit of water. Mix it up so its a thick paste and put it on the bubble. Leave it on till it goes dry and rinse well. The asprin tends to break down the scar tissue (which is basically all a blowout is). Also try massaging it daily with vitamin E oil or extra virgin olive oil. All the rubbing coupled with the good stuff in the oil should help break the tissue down a little bit.

A bubble? Do you mean like a lump just under the skin?
Either way, I'd say stay away from the tea tree oil! Its a strong antibacterial and I'm sure its not meant for piercings. Instead use surgical spirit or the sea salts mixed with a bit of warm water. Clean it twice a day and make sure you're cleaning the front, back, then moving the ring so the inside of the piercing gets cleaned. It could be that you're allergic to the ring. Try switching to Surgical Steel. And finally, if it still doesn't clear up after a few weeks of that, go to the Doctors and you may be able to get some anti biotics. Oh and use a hot compress a few times a week!

I have always been told that tea tree oil is okay for pircings.. not as a replacement for antibacterial stuff.. It helps keloids and thats what it sounds like you have.

i know what you are talking about b/c it happened to me when I got my cartilage pierced too. I dunno how to fix it b/c I took it out and then the bubble went away but when I got it repierced it came back so i just said screw it and took it out again.

It happened to me, too!! I had mine pierced for about 10 yrs and the bubble never went away. I finally took it out 2 yrs ago and the bubble is still there! I used everything on it thru the yrs and it would itch and hurt to sleep on. Maybe u can find a cure...if un do, let me know, cuz I'd pierce it again if I could get rid of the bubble...it is the oddest thing, huh??
    peace....
