    Hi,

I'm wanting to get a full back piece. What I mean by this is that I want one giant incorporated design rather than a collection of small tattoos.

My question is for anyone who has had exstensive work done. How long did it take you, what was the experience like, and do you have any tips on how to do it.

    Thanks,

i've not had such a big tattoo done but i know people who have and it took them quite a long time until they where happy. i suppose it will take you a few years and will be very expensive.

The back is sensitive... I have a smaller 3" X 4" tattoo of a "tribal" dragon between my shoulder blades. I took a few Darvocet to ease the pain, and it still was NO FUN... I'm very proud of that tattoo, and the patience to see it Done, but...

It definitely scared me from the prospect of some giant backpiece...

    Good luck with that...

I as well have a tribal tattoo between my shoulder blades. Actually mine wasn't that bad. Larger tatoos take a good chunk of time. Are you doing shading? Is it going to be colored? All things to consider when it comes to the amount of time it will take. Is it going to reach around your sides, because that can hurt. Make sure you are comfortable with your artist and the design. i had a friend do a large piece on his back and it cost him $500 and it looks really tight!!

my sweet hubby did a back piece for his friend's nephew. the kid gave us a nice (older) firebird for payment. all together, i guess it was about 40/50 or so hours he put into it - of course my hubby still has ideas on what he'd like to do to add to it. it ended up being not so much a matter of money for him, the car wasn't THAT nice, but he wanted a 'showpiece', and to really be able to have some creative freedom and be able to try out different techniques. it is all one cohesive design, but each section of course has different details. as for how long it took, the kid came over almost every weekend for several months. they would work on it till one or the other of them would get tired of doing it, or it hurt too much, or they had something else to do. worked out to be quite the investment for my hubby too - the kid brought all his friends to get tats too! so it was quite a beneficial project. the tat entirely covers his back, all greywash except for the red eyes on the dog. my hubby didn't think he was finished with it so i didn't get a pic of the last sitting - the kid lives 1 1/2 hours away, i'm gonna have to hunt him down to get a pic or ten!!

the places it really hurt him was right on his spine and his tickle spots by his waist. and yeah, low by his belt line. he also had his girlfriend, his mom, AND his grandma all taking care of it for him, so he never had any problem with his healing. tough kid - it was his first tattoo!!!
