i was given the best of jefferson airplane for xmas by a friend and i really liked it and i got surrealistic pillow and loved that too and now im wondering what album you lot would reccomend i got next. suggestions welcome
if you want something weirder than surrealistic pillow get after bathing at baxters. if you want more folkier stuff get "takes off"
It's deficult to say because for me sadly (lol) well you starded with their best album (surrealistic pillow is their softer album) Maybe you've got to start with the begining ...their 1st album who was released just 7 month before Surrealstic Pillow...This is The Jefferson Airplane Takes Off LP (sept.66) is quite interesting for a first album but this album is without Grace Slick... A Girl Named Signe Anderson was at his place... then the best is to get by order... it's easier to evolve with the band...ear how they evolve in the psychedelic californian scene... After Surrealistic Pillow (april 67) they release they released probably their most strange and underground album "After Bathing's At Baxters"(dec.67)... at first it was not my favourite but with 2 or 3 listen you enter in a more complexe and experimental concept work...very psychedelic After they release in september 68 the good "Crown of Creation" with one my favourite sleeve of that time. The album is a little similar to the previous one but a little less concept and experimental than "After Bathin..." Then the band release in sept. 69 "Volunteers" who is my favourite (with Surrealistic Pillow) Jefferson Airplane album... with a lot of good songs who include a superbe version of "Wooden Ships" ... The Rolling Stone incredible pianist Nicky Hopkins give a special touch to this album After they release 2 more album in 71 and 72 but after the Altamont Tragedy in dec.69 the band loose two members who leave the band the drummer and the singer original leader Marty Balin... Those 2 album are just good ...the flame is just not as bright...
I'd recommend Voulenteers to be honest, but You should try listening to there later stuff when they were Jeffferson Starship. Then there would be only 2 Albums I would recommend, Sunfighter & Blows against the Empire " fricken amazing Albums. & I also got to see them a few weeks ago "yey"
I understand the people who say to not hear the Jefferson Starship albums... It's clearly less interesting than the Jefferson Airplane but one is essential : Blow Against the Empire (71) is a classic and three others are good enough but not at the same level as the Airplane: Dragonfly (74) Red Octopus (75) Spitfire (76) then the ten followin' years will see the death of "hippie" rock 'n roll for punk and the Starship will became slowly conventional fathers ...recording adult music for Radio lovers...nothing very interesting when the members pass their mid-30's like a lot of bands the things start to go wrong...
yeah you're right even after mid-30s they still good! It's just a general vision the last very good Black sabbath album is from 81 (they were 33-34) the last judas priest classic is from 82 they were (32) the last very good rolling stone album is from 78 (they were 35) a lot of others since their early 30s or mid 30s ...their inspiration fall ... with a few exeption for sure like oasis (but liam is only 32!)
