hmm the best stuff ive heard about veganism was probably from a member on here named herbuhlovah who is into raw veganism and very food-smart, and the peta websites also have a lot of very good information.

i have like 6 veg cookbooks collected from various places and one vegan one i got for christmas last year but i have to say ive never used one of them, lol, so i cant help you there..if you go to your library though they probly have some you can check out for free, vegan ones too.

Becoming vegan [Brenda Davis & Vesanto Melinda]
    &
How it all vegan [can't remember who wrote that]

LOL I'm not vegan, but those are the best. Have a fair few veggie cookbooks but none stand out.

Cooking for Consciousness is a great lacto-veg book. I also really like Traditional Vegetarian Cooking, by Cranks Restaurant. I just got the Tofu Book which looks really good. As far as general health/diet goes. the best book by far is, in my opinion, Healing With Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford. Absolutely the best book in the world. I dont have any vegan cookbooks that I really like. Most veg books tho have substitutions in them to convert any recipe to vegan.

Cool, I'll have to try out these suggestions. I like Gandhi's "Experiments with Truth". Though it's not a cookbook, there are 3 or 4 chapters dedicated to diet, and I was really impressed.

    Apparently so. Here's a quote:

"I decided to live on a pure fruit diet, and that too composed of the cheapest fruits possible. The fruit diet turned out to be very convenient also. Cooking was practically done away with. Raw groundnuts, bananas, dates, lemons, and olive oil composed our usual diet." (Chapter 30)

What an amazing dude. He talks about fasting for 14 days straight & how to do it. But the book has a lot of dry stuff about law & political reform, too. Well, maybe you're a historian as well. :) Give it a try!

The best book I've personally read, and there are dozens upon dozens of reviews on every veg website I've ever seen that just sing it's praises. It's really great because in a very staright-forward way it explains nutrition, what you need, what food sources (plant and animal) are the heavy providers, and gives great ideas for real life consumption. It also made me realize that if your body has all the proper nutrients it needs to function, those horrible food cravings that make "dieting" so difficult for the average mortal just seem to disappear! YAY!

I like the cookbooks by Lorna Sass (especially 'Vegetarian Cooking under Pressure' and 'The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook'). Another favorite is 'Encredibly Delicious' by Gentle Word. I also like 'Nonna's Italian Kitchen' by Bryanna Clark Grogan.

And for dessert books I like 'Simple Treats' by Ellen Abraham (the brownie I made from this cookbook won first price at a contest) and 'Great Good Desserts Naturally' by Fran Costigan.

You can go here for some sample recipes from cookbooks.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Laurel's Kitchen. There are two versions of it. The first one is very thick and has all kinds of how to stuff. Good info on mixing foods to get all the essentials and stuff like that. Then you can buy another version that only has the recipes. Same recipes as the first one but without all the help. The recipes are great, especially the chili.
