The classic Raider-Waite is a good one to start with. However my favorite is the Robin Wood kind, the illustrations are beautiful.

I was doing tarots last night under a so high-white-widow mood..so my roomate said: read me tarots? so I did in a very high-funny-silly- way , joking all the time before discovering the cards..then the first card I turned came out "The Pope" next to "The Moon" and the third card in a row was "The Death"....man I was speechless

I use a Celtic Deck, but started out with Raider Waite. Go to a book store or eevr carrys cards near you. Ask to see the decks and hold them, look at them and you will find the right deck for you. I have a few decks that I can see nothing with. Then there are the ones that I can just hold and know. Brightest Blessings in you journey

i have had tarot cards that i bought from a book store and it comes with reading instructions, but i've never been able to understand instructions when i have to read them, im more of a 'show and tell' type of person ya know? so i'm still stuck with my tarot cards w/o the ability to read them.

you need to ask a friend
    to get your deck
the cards are supposed to be a gift
from one person to the next

like passing on the knowledge and introducing
you to the tarot paths.that will be laid.

i have a lovely deck...rider waite tarot deck... these are over
20 years old now. i may pass these on someday to
    a friend who seems interested........
    and
my long time female friend spirit of 13 years
    passed these to me
    she helped me to understand
    different connections
within the cards and their past
history...for personal and helpful use for others....

dont be afraid to look past the card
    into the spreads to find
the cause of any question asked

    so good luck

Go with the simplest deck first, but one that's interesting enough for you :) (I know that's vague.) Just pick a deck that appeals to you, they all ought to come with some kind of instruction.

I'd recommend the Rider-Waite deck. If you don't like the art or it doesn't otherwise appeal to you, then buy a deck that appeals to you that follows the general imagery of the Rider-Waite; as well, buy a Rider-Waite deck as a standard of comparison, as most modern-day decks are based on it.
