A Language Older Than Words is an awesome and inspiring book by an author who came to visit my prison... er, I mean boarding school when I was a junior in Ashville, NC. The book is about Derrick's own personal revelations as he grows his own meats, works to reform the practice of clearcutting, and as tells the story of his past, which is everything from remarkably amazing, to terribly tragic, to absolutely heart-breaking and scary. The book is about a real person, and it is his recount of how his life really was. Derrick doesn't just tell you the story, but he tells you his psyche at the time and he let's you walk through his journey in his own shoes, and you'll see through his own eyes. Some of the tales will make you squirm and chill your very bones, but all the while you are brought to a very blunt realization that this is what he really dealt with, and this is what he deals with now. This book is about as close as I have come towards realizing the basic problems of our society, organization, structure, and traditions, but there's even more to it. Derrick allows you to realize that there is something about yourself that you probably didn't know you even had. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is ready for a deep journey into their soul. Good luck, and bright blessings to all who choose to read this. Listen, and it will speak. Look, and it will dance for you.
I have just finished reading it and agree, it is brilliant and vitally relevant. One of those books that everyone should read.
