In response to this week's Supreme Court ruling granting the Justice Department the authority to prosecute state-authorized medicinal cannabis patients for violating the federal Controlled Substances Act, members of the US House of Representatives may vote as early as next week on an amendment to bar the US Department of Justice (DOJ) from prosecuting patients who use medical cannabis in compliance with state laws. This important bi-partisan provision, scheduled to be introduced next week by Reps. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-NY) as an amendment to the 2005 Justice Department appropriations bill, would prohibit the DOJ and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from spending taxpayers' dollars for the purpose of pursuing "any criminal or civil penalty or remedy against any person for the production, distribution, or use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in a state that authorizes that production, distribution, or use." Writing for the Court's majority, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens said that he longs for the day when medicinal cannabis advocates "may be heard in the halls of Congress." The 2005 Hinchey/Rohrabacher medical marijuana amendment does just that -- giving Congress the opportunity to go on record to protect and support the health and safety of patients who use cannabis therapeutically in compliance with the laws of their state. A vote on the amendment is expected as early as next Wednesday, so members of Congress urgently need to hear overwhelming support from their constituents. Please call and/or e-mail your member of the US House Representatives today and ask them to vote "yes" in favor of the Hinchey/Rohrabacher medical marijuana amendment. A pre-written letter is available here: http://capwiz.com/norml2/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=7309441 Show your colors and stop whining about it on here!.... Email your State reps NOW... there is no time... we must have this amendment passed immediately..... if you do not send an email.... you might as well just shut the hell up on here.... because obviously you dont care enough to fight for peoples rights.... so be a freedom fighter and act now!
ya i've sent an email from each one of my email addresses. i find it ironic that they make medical marijuana illegal and let marinol, which is a synthetic version of THC available in pill form (incase somebody didn't know,) still be prescribed.
Get your facts straight, please- Propaganda from any side is deplorable. "...this week's Supreme Court ruling granting the Justice Department the authority to prosecute state-authorized medicinal cannabis patients for violating the federal Controlled Substances Act..." The ruling granted nothing. The feds already had that authority. It's a well established priciple of American law, and the reason for historical squabbles over State's Rights. The ruling merely affirmed the status quo. NOTHING has changed.
There's nothing wrong with being proactive. Besides, I know a bunch of VFW guys that are calling and writing their reps right now. I laid this on my old man, he took it to them, they're taking it to their reps. Gotta love it.
i know this is probably a stupid question, but if your state represenative has your name and all of your personal info, then could they prosecute you, or investigate, etc., etc.?
i dont think they could prosecute you for voicing your opinion... its your freedome to voice your opinion.... also just because some people are pro-medical marijuana doesnt mean they smoke... some people just know the facts without ever touching the herb personally.. stop being afraid.... theres too many people like yourself that are afraid to voice their opinion because "they might get in trouble".... our voices must be heard..... otherwise we will never get anywhere.. and will continue to get pushed around by the government and their propaganda
Indeed there are too many people afraid of gettin in trouble...BTW dont just do it yourself, send it around to people you know (yes i am doing this). The more people who send the letter, the better.
Of course we can make a difference. If there's enough "we"... But let's not start by hurting our credibility with inflamatory rhetoric. "Just the facts, ma'am". After all, the truth is on our side.
Well, marinol cannot be used recreationally and that is one thing that they are worried about. The thing that I find ironic is that they are prescribing oxycontin, an addictive narcotic (not that I have anything agaisnt this being prescribed), and not a harmless plant.
