i don't know if this really belongs in here, but oh well.

i just got dreadlocks, and if i don't want a dirty disgusting head i need to find some residue free shampoo. i was just wondering if anyone knew the name of a really good one that won't put me into the poor house.
(if you want to recommend a nice hair wax that would rock too.)

Shampoo? wow. I thought the whole point of dreads was that you *don't* use shampoo...

Tip yer head up, pour over a jug of warm water with a wee squirt of mild shampoo in it, about 2 pints of solution and massage yer dreads. Too add sparkle and fragrance add a thimble's worth of supermarket brand conditioner into 2 pts of warm water, massage in, rinse and dry naturally. The conditioner deters any bugs from setting up home too :)

okay i have knotty boy shampoo, but it's not really shampoo it's a bar that i rub through my hair, you can also just buy hemp soap, it's the same thing, don't worry to much about washing them, the longer you go the better, i wash mine on average once every two and three weeks... usually i forget how long it's been...

oh and congrats on getting dreads, they amazing, and you'll have an instant bond with other dreaders. they make friends :)

    good luck you new babies!

    i recommend tea tree shampoo.
Get one which is a high percentage of tea tree oil, as it is anti fungal and anti bacterial, and in Australia is $5.50 a bottle, and a bottle will last me 1-2 months, washing twice a week.
    Hope it helps :)

haha it's true! 4 boys downtown with dreadlocks nodded or smiled or waved and one guy told me my hair was "bitchin".
lol thanks! i just want to take good care of them, i don't want them to get gross and smelly... because then they'd stop likeing me.

hm. I don't have dreads, but I do use vinegar, apple cider vinegar to wipe out residue.
I'd think a shampoo as normal, rinse, vinegar rinse and a last rinse, maybe with some essential oils, would work.
On "parallel hair" the vinegar smell dissapates in about 30 min. I'd rerinse absorbent dreads.

Yeah, I know you *can* wash locks; I just wonder why you'd want to. To me, the whole point of having locks is so I never have to think about haircuts, shampoo, styling &c. - I just get up and go. Why do you all have locks then, if you still bother with all that baldhead crap like washing hair?

People with dredz, not washing their hair is a myth, people think that you can't was dreadlock because the soaps unlock the dredz,

I wash mine once a week & there pretty cool, washing them actually helps them as if you don't wash them they get greasy therfore they dont lock

But... but... why? I'm really confused here. Surely if you wash your hair once a week, you might as well just have 'normal' hair?

I'm totaly confused here, why shouln't people with dredz wash their hair
if you don't they start to smell & go yucky, then the Women wouldn't wan't
to go out with you then you'l be aloner & end up shagless for the rest of you life :p

Dude. Washing your hair is bullshit. Shampoo washes out all the natural oils that keep your hair clean, which means that dirt and shit build up, meaning you need to wash it with shampoo, which washes out the natural oils, which allows dirt in, which...

If you stop washing your hair for six months, it starts cleaning itself. Maybe this is just me, but I've not washed my hair in years and it's fine. Seriously - my bird would complain if I smelt - she does regularly! But she never says a word about my locks. And as for grease, all I can say is :-OOOO. My hair is about as far from greasy as you can get.

I first got dreads because I wasn't in a position to wash or cut my hair - I started with short hair, then a kinky 'fro: http://www-student.cs.york.ac.uk/~jw222/jim-2001.jpg, then it just collapsed into knots and tangles. Cutting them apart and encouraging them to grow 'neatly' led to locks:http://www-student.cs.york.ac.uk/~jw222/oops.jpg. I haven't washed my hair more than a dozen times since that first photo. As far as I'm concerned, locks are what happens when you can't be arsed with shampoo, styling and all that other vain bollocks. I assume that the reason you guys have 'em because you think they look pretty? Or what?

Quite the opposite, I couldn't be arsed with hair styles either so decided for
dreds, but I couldn't go without washing them, It's an either or thing, I've heard from both sides, but more from the washing them.

It all depends on the individual I suppose but it's just from what I've read & heard that's all

I get it. Fair enough, if you enjoy washing them. Personally, wet locks annoy the hell out of me!

    Nice cat, by the way!
