I was already vegetarian, then I saw a picture of hundreds of little chickens burnt and thrown away just like trash, because they were male and so not useful for the eggs....I read about the way cows are artificially fecundated , continuously ...and decided to be vegan.

Lol, so my story's kind of weird, I've never heard another, but maybe poisting this will encourage others to come forward!

So, I have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and coincidentally a very active imagination... The OCD includes persistent violent images that are disturbing (as opposed to gratifying or desirous) to the so afflicted. When I was younger (about 5) and didn't even conceive of non-meat eating as an option, I dreaded Thanksgiving with that turkey carcass on the table... I wouldn't come to the table if the bones were visible, so my mom ended up having to take the meat off the bones and just bring piles of meat to the table... To this day I shiver just thinking about seeing that ribcage sitting in front of me exposed like that... Lol, sorry for being graphic, but this is life with OCD-- I just could NOT ever ever get that image out of my head because of the disorder. Isn't that horrible, lol? If I would get stressed about something completely unrelated, in would pop various disturbing obsessive images, and that poor ribcage would be one of them... And then eggs too, my mind would just create this image of eating aborted human fetuses! (I AM SOOO SORRY FOR THE GRAPHIC NATURE OF THIS POST!)

Having OCD is a VERY effective way of becoming and staying vegan, lol, isn't that sick?

^ Very cool story LilDove. I often wonder if--shall we say--"mental eccentricities" are the impetus behind major life changes. I love to hear it when someone puts a neurosis to good use! (I had a similar story, but I feel sorta creepy talking about it... so... um, yeah.) Anyway, congratulations & condolences on your vivid imagination. I think. :)

sorry mate but why care about the workers? it's their choice to work in a slaughterhouse and there is no way they deserve any respect or dignity. only the animals deserve that and they also deserve to have a decent life. how on earth can anyone kill a likkle cute cuddly lamb is beyond me and as for eating one or drinking milk that's stolen from another creatures baby, all i can say is WHY?????????

Hmmm.... why care? Alot of the times it's NOT a choice, especially in the countries the World Bank and WTO will only let them repay their debts is by using their land for grain fed cattle to send to the US.

God, maybe if some vegans got their facts straight and got less sentimental all the time, bitching and moaning about "likkle cute cuddly lambs" and started worrying about their fellow oppressed HUMANS too, um, them maybe meat slaughterers would take us seriously. Eating meat, especially fast food doesn't just hurt "likkle cute cuddly" animals, but our fellow HUMANS.

    ::done ranting::

I would be vegan, but in my famly's current financial status I can't. I am, however, greatly disturbed by the treatment of these animals. I've readup so much on the issue as well as watched the video a few times before. I am vegitarian, but still, I nearly cry every time I ear any dairy or egg-containing product.
Sadly, I doubt I can go vegan until I'm done with college. I'm still in High School, and thus living with my parents, and in college I doubt I could afford to go vegan.
Really, my friends think I'm psycho. I spaz out when I eat anything non-organic, cuz I'm petrified of what chemichals may be in it... but still... I don't wanna put too much of a financial strain on my parents. Me and my bro are both vegitarian which amounts to quite a high grocery ill as it is...

Oh man, I sure was cranky yesterday! But my point was, if you are going to make an ethical argument for not consuming animal products, you make a stronger case by abstaining from sentiment... And then those ethics... would you still be veg if you didn't think lambs and cows are cute and cuddly? I personally am not an animal cuddler... Yea, I love my dog, but farm animals just smell... I'm vegan because I just feel that the consequences all around are just far too great otherwise.... Lol, "food" for thought!

You'd be surprised how not so crazy expensive it can be to go vegan. The trick is learning how to cook and prepare your own food, because well, convenience foods are SO so expensive, vegan or not. Grains, legumes and veggies are not expensive by themselves, but then again, if you aren't going to cook them yourself, you run the risk of boring and gross food. Regular, not-exotic spices can go a looooooong way to dress up rice and beans! Sure dulse is yummy and interesting, but it can get expensive. Actually, I'm not having too much of a problem being vegan at the college dining halls, so there are ways around that not-cooking-for-yourself thing too! Be creative!

Lol, if you wait for college for your financial situation to improve so that you feel you can better afford going vegan, lol, um, ask any college student how POOR you are in college!! The best way is just to take the plunge and figure out cheap ways of nurishing yourself. "Becoming Vegan" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina is SUCH a great investment. Check out the books in this thread also. Trust me, it is not too expensive!!

    Thanks, little dove.
I've always assumed the argument to be respect animals AS we respect "higer " life forms: humans. Not more, not less.
Since a fair number of omnis are war hawks, perhaps that's what they done, so the consciousness needs to be that all entities have some right to a healthy, happy life not ended by greed, desire or whim.
Every time a vegan says something like "screw people" it ONLY adds fuel to the meat industry shills' fires.
"They don't care about people." "They want all people to die of horrible diseases."
"they care more about mink than the men and women who make their living at (fill in the blank)"
GUess what: I believe that looking at one animal (say a cow) as an "extractable resource" makes a group of people MORE likely to look at people (say, women) as an "extractable resource."
We have people obsessed with keeping cows pregnant so they may have the milk.
Factions of that mind-set also tend to think all women who become pregnant stay so to get whatever the benefit of overpopulation is is their minds... OH I remember: milk-based formula and milk product consumers. ;P Seriously, if we continue exploitation of anything, it becomes a moral slippery slope.
I am referring to massive-scaled agriculture, here.
If a family has one cow and a few chickens and are living off grid, that I have little problem with. Would I do it?
Don't think so, but to get out of the rat race? Maybe. I'd definitely consider how I'd do it. I would be lacto veg in that case, working on the assumption of a bad harvest here and there and cheese is less invasive than chops.
