how crazy. i saw them opening for hum in hollywood, that first time. i thought the first band, the regurgitators were by far more talented and that they should have bypassed the melvins entirely.

    LOL She couldn't either.
I DO think Kurt killed himself but I think grunge was already starting to die anyways. I mean Nirvana didn't want to be "grunge" anymore. It was mid 90's jock rock became big soon after rap hit the mainstream and music as we know it was lost. At least in the mainstream it was.

I agree, I think he killed his self too, I think a lot of people try to glorify his life and drug addictions and depression by saying he was murderd. Guess being murderd sounds more......I dunno more something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, alot of people fail to see that grunge goes further than Kurt's ego.

Nirvana achieved such mainstream success because they were the only grunge band that managed to "connect" with the souls of teenagers then and now. They represented the "teenage angst" in thier lyrics and sharp guitar notes...
I remember me, when I was 13, loving Nirvana because they told how i felt, I completely connected with them...

A person finds his own music, no matter of the time period.

So, grunge, or at least Nirvana, isn't dead, because... there are thousands of teenagers out there who can still connect with the music. It is not on mainstream anymore, which only makes it better, it is not sold out...

Kurt Cobain was the voice of a generation, and still is.

The Smashing Pumpkins are much better than Nirvana in every musical sense, but they failed to achieve what Nirvana achieved with their fanbase.

I agree, but I also disagree. Nirvana got a bunch of immature, whiney teenagers. Smashing Pumpkins got that as well, but mostly it was adults, especially later on.

Many people out-grow Nirvana, myself included. I don't know many who out-grow Smashing Pumpkins.

So, while Nirvana may have a larger fan base, Smashing Pumpkins have a more mature one. Besides, I don't think Nirvana completely sold out the United Center.

I never considered Smashing Pumkins grunge, just alterna rock with a pretentious singer and a bad voice.

Anyway, i think Pearl Jam and Nu Metal killed it. All of a suddent jock types realized this "grunge" was as good as say, Van Halen, and they infiltrated the scene. The music was no longer under the radar.

I my mind Mudhoney was THE Grunge band, of course they put out some bad records at the end.

Ha, that must have hurt for Mudhoney....being around Eddie Vedder for a whole tour that is :)

The more I think about it, the more I am sure bands like Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots attracted more of a metal crowd that transformed the genre into nu metal.

You were seeing the ones who practically birthed "grunge" opening for grunges metallic old age;)

Defenatly, the Smashing Pumpkins are impossible to outgrow that fast. Yet, Nirvana touches just the age group at which it is directed 13-16 year olds, and they touched most of us, and opened our eyes to better music. The Pumpkins might be a better band, but they do not connect emotionaly with one as Nirvana does. Nirvana is part of me, part of my past... i outgrew them, but, thier music helped me so much... helped me pass hard stages in my life.

Pumpkins target a more mature audience, they are a better band. Yet, they do not have the effect. This is not about the fan base. Britney Spears has more fans than both bands combined... this is about the effect of the music.

Smashing Pumpkins certainly have an effect on me, and many people I know. But I do see what you're saying. However, you make it sound as if they don't effect anyone, which is very far from the truth.

    Yes, you are right.

    Let me rephrase:

People listen to music because it makes them feel something. Nirvana just connected more with people, made them feel more than the Pumpkins.

You're an idiot. The Vines suck and the lead singer has admitted to wanting to live and be just like Kurt Cobain. Let's hope he hurries up and gets to the suicide part.

Edit: Shit. I just replied to a thread I've replied to under a different name. Please don't ban.
