i like the way you pointed out those stores and how they hire...
I used to go shopping with a friend of mine who liked those stores [bleck] ...I walked into Abercrombie with her one day, while I was suffering from an eating disorder and at a gross 80 pounds at 5 foot 6... the first thing that happened when I walked in there, was some little shit of a girl ran up to me [she worked there] and asked me if I wanted a job there, because I would "look so cute in their clothes"...I just about puked.

A year later, I walk into the same store with my friend once again, only I was healthier... And instead, this time instead of job offerings I received glares of disgust because I didnt have every bone in my body portruding out of my skin.

    Sick.

I want to have tee like that!!!!! I am definately going to be part of the revolution!

Oh yeah, and by the way, I don't wear a bra either. they are kind of annoying. I only wear them if I (I) don't like the shape of my breasts in a certein piece of cloth. But that is very seldom. My breasts are usually very neat without a holder, (except if he happens to be my bf :p )

Americans, especially younger ones, are completely obsessed with self image. We can blame the media, or we can take personal responsibility for what we think and stand up to the media. At the school where i went to college, so many girls were starving. I worked at a restaurant that sold a lot of salads. we had a sick running joke that one in ten of our salads ever made it all the way through a digestive tract. Sick...but not too far from the truth.

read Adbusters. Check out their website. www.adbusters.org read one of their magazines. they are as visually stunning as they are mind blowing.

They get into the deeper problems assiciated with media and corporate culture, and they offer very real activist solutions.

I agree with all that :)
The people who I admire are the people who are themselves. The people who don't give a fuck what the media says they look like and are totally comfortable in their own skin.
The media often pollutes your mind and some people don't even realise it, they just get obbsessed with losing weight and looking what the media says is 'perfect' when its not about losing weight to get healthy, its about losing weight to look more like the airbrushed models in magazines which is not achievable anyway.
Its so screwed up and I find it really depressing. I mean yeah, people should wear what makes them feel good and what suits them, but I'm a size 10(UK size) and when I stopped boxing due to an injury, I gained a few pounds, nothing major, and yet my own mother was calling me fat and ugly when I looked, honestly, exactly the same. Its so awful and just shows that the media can influence you whatever age you are.

Its really effective on people with low selfesteem who are around people it has effected, they want to be accepted, and the people expect them to be that certain way.

Wouldn't life just be easier if we all just stopped caring about this whole "relationships" thing?

When I lost my libido completely it changed my life.

I can be as fat as I want, lose my hair, whatever, and I have no reason to care in any way. Not that I have, I like being strong and healthy, but whatever, ya know?

Peacelovebarefeet - My suggestion - be yourself. Anyone who doesn't love you for who you are can go and whistle.

Now in my case, this is impossible, so the entire world can kiss my white ass.

I come from a long line of full figured women, and have been dealing with a weight issue most of my life. I realized when I did loose the weight, even then I would never have that pencil this figure. Years later I started studing Wicca. It really opened my eyes to how different cultures viewed women. What I did learn was women come in all different shapes & sizes & we are all beautiful. We are the givers of life. To try and live up to what the media's view of what we should be is unrealistic & unhealthy. Beauty is internal, everything else is smoke & mirrors. If we can pass this knowledge on to our children then maybe the cycle can be broken. One can only hope!! ;)

I'm with Megara, by the way. Which no one seemed to really take to heart. Quit whining already. You can't change the world, society, the media, your neighbor, your enemy, ANYONE. Just the way you think.

If the media is so awful, why are most of you (this is a guess by the way, so it may not be true, I imagine some of you have already woken up, stopped doing what I am about to say but...) watching TV, looking at magazines, watching movies, partaking in various forms of mindless entertainment which feed this form of thought.

Maybe if you stop pointing fingers, or better yet, keep pointing it, go get a mirror and stand in front of it. Now at whom is your finger pointing at?

And if anyone were to personally come up to you or say something regarding beauty or weight, anger may come but forgiveness always works too. They are your human brothers and sisters and should treat one another with compassion, foriveness and an understanding of what may 'tick' us off about someone else may be something we do say think etc, ourselves.

I'm also sure, NONE of you have judged anyone in your entire lives, HAH, what a joke. I have judged, and I have realized that was only a part of myself, I did not love nonconditionaly. When one begins to look inward instead of outward one will cease comparing and judging oneself against another and come to a new state of inner peace and acceptance.

Wut the original poster said... it is the Media...

But the trick is not to confuse the messages u get from the media with the values & standards of our society (if thats even possible these days). What you see on tv is there to make someone money, its not there to comfort you and add to your self esteem...

Now if u owned a corporation would u want anyone feeling satified with who they are?

Now I'm not saying tv is completely fake, it's just that so few people realize that it's romatisized and exagerated...

The media will give to people what they want to see/hear. Men seem biologically predisposed to liking a certain type (generally, thinner is better). From my own experience I have tended to prefer thin women. At Bonnaroo a lot of the hippie girls were slender and I thought that was very attractive. However, some girls who are a little plump look good, so thin = superior is not absolute.

Some women think their hips are too wide, but wide hips can be very attractive. It's actually the waist that is more important to keep in shape for women. A slim waist and relatively wide hips usually gives a woman nice curves (I had an ex who complained about her hips...).

As I have gotten older I have found that it is easier to get out of shape. When I am done with school I will be working out a lot to get toned up again. So, we are all responsible for making ourselves healthier, regardless of the media and social biases.

Some people are more inclined to obesity than others. Some people are just "big boned." It's not always the person's fault when he/she is overweight. Still, we all can make ourselves look and feel better with some effort.

The purpose of television (and some other media) is to make people unhappy.
Kill that television, people. You'll be so much happier. You'll be amazed at what a difference it makes. It's been two years for me and I will never have it in my home again.
