    hi,
i'm brand new at this sewing thing, and teaching myself, and as always, funds are tight. so i took out some books from the library, and borrowed a sewing machine from a friend.
i had SOME fabric laying around, in the form of old cloths and a garage sale find, but i'm always afraid to WASTE it, cuz i really don't have a clue what i'm doing.....

so, as always, i turned to www.freecycle.org. it's an AWESOME site. it's a site where ppl post things that they need, or that they no longer want. the only catch is that is HAS to be FREE (and appropriate for all ages).
my "Wanted: fabric for sewing projects" post turned up 2 responses, both within 10 minutes of my apartment. one was a bag of 5 different fabrics, some solid, some cute patterns....
the other response was for a BOX of stuff! she had some upholstry samples, big pieces, small pieces, and lotsa precut squares.

so, 9pm last night, i sit down, read the instructions, and figured out how to thread the machine. i couldn't believe it actually worked! (the foot that holds the fabric down is missing, though--friend is looking for it)

i decided that modifying something that is already the right shape should be easier than a new creation. so i took an old pair of my man's shorts that are tight on the tummy, and decided it couldn't be too hard to put sidepanels in it...i see you mamas do it all the time!
lol... i got 4 patches together and broke the needle...and of course the stores are closed! grrrrr!

so, today i will go buy needles and try again. i assume i can just stitch the patches together, cut the shorts down the side and sew the patchy strip in?
i promise to post some pics, no matter how silly it comes out. i'm totally winging it (any advice would be gladly taken!)

sorry to be so new here and leave such a long post. wish me luck!

    peace
    LP

I agree freecycle rocks! I started with sidepanels too; although, I ripped out the sideseams which takes sooooooooooooo much longer than just cutting them out. Good luck. :)
