I have a question for the "old Hippies" ;) here:

do you know, what it was like for the "foreign" Hippies, that came to Amerika in the 60`s?

If you came from Germany in perhaps 1968 to California, did you need a residence permit to stay there for a longer time, or did many of them come illegal and did they stay illegal?

Was it possible for them - if they came illegal - to receive a residence permit later (when those times were over and they deceided to stay in the USA because they married or something else).

    Sabine from Germany

Gee, Sabine, I knew more than a few foreign exchange students and college students back in the mid 60's, Germans among them. But I don't know about the things you're asking. I can't remember running into illegals though, and I'm racking my brain to think of one or two. No, no one comes to mind.

hey, I'm not so sure about the 60's but in the mid 70's I had a couple of friend's from Germany that were not permitted to stay past the time limit on their vacation visa. One did come back to work but she had to arrange for her employer to say that she had a skill that no one else could do. She was only able to stay then for a year or two. Then her government employer was no longer in office and her request for a visa extention was denied. I ended up being related to her as I married her cousin. ;)

In the 60s there were TWO Deutschlands. I never knew of any East Germans in the United States as I don't think East Germans were ever able to go to any non Eastbock countries.

Germans travelling to the United States always needed a visa. Student visas were granted for durations of one year. The laws regarding marrying an American in order to obtain legal residency hasn't changed much in the past forty years. It would depend where a person lived and where a person came from that would determine whether or not the State Department would question these people.

I knew more young men in the 60s who were eager to LEAVE America due to the Vietnam lottery.

    Thanks! You really helped me!
I asked myself, what happened to all these young people, that came to San Francisco from all over the world in the 60`s. I don`t think, that they all had a permition.
