Senate Committee Approves Expanding Patriot Act
On Capitol Hill, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence met in secret Tuesday and approved expanding the Patriot Act to make it easier for the government to secretly gather records on individuals without a court order or grand jury subpoena. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the bill would give the government unilateral power to let agents seize personal records from medical facilities, libraries, hotels, gun dealers, banks and any other businesses without any specific facts connecting those records to any criminal activity or a foreign agent.

we can only hope that enough senators realized their mistake with voting the Patriot Act in so quickly the first time. Maybe they'll actually read what they're voting for this time...

Since when is this government of, by and for the government? Because that's sure what it's starting to look like, as they ignore and trample the rights of the people.

The Constitution clearly says that "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty,or property without due process of law".

The Nuremberg Laws*,ooops I mean the Patriot Act says that the gov't can indefinately detain anyone without charges or a trial.

This is a clear violation of the Constitution and therefore makes all lawmakers that voted for it guilty of violating their Oath of Office in which they swear to uphold and defend the Constitution.

    * The Nuremberg Laws were the set of laws that stripped German-Jews of their rights.

NOOOOOOOOO! First the original patriot act, then Real Id, now the expansion. Oh god, this goes beyond violating the constitution; it's downright scary. I've got to get the fuck out of this backwards country.

    The Patriot Act...

Okay, I would like to say that politicians are the most low-down, sleazy, twisted, corrupted, sick, morally twisted, apathetic, neglegent scum lickers on the face of the planet.

Thanks for being too goddam lazy to read something that you knew you had to make a decision on and greatly threatening the security of an impressionable youth who now is determined to never, as long as he lives, ever vote Republican OR Democratic.

Thanks for screwing us over, assholes.

Ha, if things keep going down this road we won't even be voting for our president. The Senate will just appoint who they see fit, and further neglect the American people of their rights. I see a future where people like us are beat in the streets for our "radical" views on life. It's just sad man. When will we have peace and freedom.

We all might as well enjoy hipforums while we can. With the way this country is going we won't have hipforums to speak our opinions anymore.

A few points on the unpatriot act:
-once legislation is enacted, it is almost never repealed
-just as many democrats voted for the act as republicans
-no one really knows what the upatriot act allows

Congress didn't approve a few minor points (library check-outs, bookstore purchases scrutiny) but the act is here to stay.
Good ol' john kerry voted for it the first time, as did all the other good little democrats.
The full ramifications of the unpatriot act are as yet still unknown.

Until real opposition parties emerge, with full backing from the people, this ill not change. If everyone "knows" the unpatriot act is so wrong, why does it still exist? Who is reall watching out for us in DC? No one. There is no one in either party with the guts to denounce this bs law for what it really is--a shameless power grab by law enforcvement and the gov't. How many attacks have REALLY been thwarted by it. They recently let into the US a blood-covered man in from canada with a bloody sword. Who was a suspect in a murder in canada. The southern and northern US borders are beyond porous. Are the threats from native or naturalized US citizens? Or are they foreign-born, radicalized, extremist, islamist terorists? Does the government make a distinction? Read the legislation--IT DOESN'T.

Let me correct you - he was carrying a homemade sword, a chainsaw, brass knuckles and a machete , all bloodstained as was he.

Sorry, my mistake. I stand corrected. Does it really make that much of a difference?

Yeah, you're right. If it was JUST a sword, I'm sure our diligent border patrol would have been right on top of it. But, with all that weaponry, they probably mistook him for an errant Mainer :)
