So, I've been here almost two weeks... NZ has a very simple policy on going barefoot... there is none. It's a non-issue. You either wear shoes, or not... it really doesn't matter one way or the other... people are very accepting of it. Mindblowing!! One of my favorite examples of this is the supermarkets around here. I've been in many around the country and quite frankly, you can't walk into one without seeing at least a couple of barefoot children or adults. Again, it's really a non-issue. As an american from the north east, at first it's quite a novelty to see, but then, you get to understand that not everywhere is as tight-assed as the Northeast US. NZ is a very unpretentious place. A 'please' and 'thank you' will get you far... after that, do whatever you want as long as you're not hurting anybody.
Heay wichaxe hows it going? i got my computer up and running so i thought i'll start posting again, when i can. what part of nz are you in,im moving to wellington in a few weeks looking foreward to it,im a bit bored with Hawks Bay nothing really here for me anymore ,going to be a student for a few years yippy.art, yoga and oganic hortirculture coures :H Also if youre in wellington on the 9th you should go to SHIHAD Woo there awsome :X . :H If you're in wellington on a sunday night you should go to hare krishan feast i cant remember the streat name but ya probably can find it, 3$ all you can eat vegetarian food mmm, i sometimes go and there really friendly people. You just have to sit though a talk on krishna and a really long song but its worth it. the mind control song .
I've read about New Zealand's attitutde and hop to see it for myself one day. The policy in the UK is fairly similar as far as acceptance is concerned. What really holds us back though is that most people are either afraid to do it or think it would be more of an issue than it actually is, so while it's perfectly ok almost everywhere (the only exceptions I've come across are clubs with dress codes), it's very rare that you actually see anyone barefoot. They're not so much afraid of policies, but are very afraid of what everyone else will think of them.
if i went barefoot, i know load sof people would find it odd. No one would challenge me, or think badly of me, but they'd definitely think i was strange.
Yes, that's it. It's built into society that it's just not done. But if anyone does, then no-one really tries to stop them like in America.
Went to New Zealand earlier this year myself...whichaxe is absolutely right. It's great to be in a place where you can be barefoot and no one gives you strange looks and you don't have to worry about those horrible shoe police. I'm thinking about going back for a while for business purposes, but also so I can be in a beautiful place where I can be barefoot and hassle-free. Would love to hear more from the Kiwi's and visitors alike. Love to you all.
Nikko....sup dude... I'm waving at Antarctica from Invercargill right now. Tomorrow, Dunedin, and Wellington on Monday. Then, We shoot back up to Auckland. I'm hoping to catch a couple of good shows and even poke around the jazz scene a little bit before I go home. As far as moving here... sheesh.... I definitely want to do it.. but now, I have even more variables, most notably... What part of NZ should I live in??? Wellington seems like a good choice, but South Island is pretty cool too. And although it gets a bad rap, I wasn't all that discontented with Auckland outside of the five minute rain / sun thing that happens this time of year. Decisions decisions.... If you're near the cities, gimme a shout.
