Why does the old testement tell the jews to offer sacrifices but later on God tells the jews he never said that. Hes not simply changing his mind, hes claiming he never said such a thing. But he clearly did say it. http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/burnt.html
I only read the passages quoted, but it's pretty apparent from this one: Jeremiah 7:22 "For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices." that God was talking about the day God brought them out of Egypt. The passages from Exodus are after God had brought the Jews out of Egypt. Technically, God could speak to the Jews about sacrifices on any day besides the day that God brought the Jews out of Egypt and the statement God made in Jeremiah 7:22 would be accurate.
Well. you could look at Jeremiah 7:22 in context if you really want to understand it: Jeremiah 7:21-23 "Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. 22For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: 23But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you." God was not talking to the fathers of the Israelites about burnt offerings or sacrifices on the day they were brought out of Egypt. God was commanding them to obey God's voice (on the day they were brought out of Egypt)... Not only does the Jeremiah quote only address the day that God brought the Jews out of Egypt, it says that God did not speak to them about burnt offerings and sacrifices on that day. The skeptics annotated bible is apparently written by fools.
EXACTLY. The skeptics should pay a little attention before those claims. I'll make it even more simplified: "For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices." Notice how it says 'in the DAY' not 'in the days'
Yes. Essentially what God is saying is that he did not at that time command burnt offerings be made but now, in the days of Jeremiah, he does. It would not have made sense during the exodos for God to have commanded burnt offernings since the Jews had very little at that time, certainly not enough to have been able to afford to make burnt offerings. In the days of Jeremiah the Isrealits were quite wealthy so burnt offering made sense as a way of worship and veneration of God. At least that is my understanding of it.
