Star Wars Question

I was wondering if anyone here knows the answer to this one. A friend and I have been arguing about this.

When the original Star Wars came out in 1977, did it say anywhere in the title credits "Episode 4: A New Hope"???

I know all the DVD versions do now, but was it there originally in '77.

I didn't think it was but my friend swears it was.

Oh, and if you're under the age of twenty your answer doesn't count!!!

 

It definitely wasn't in the original release. I think it was added at the time of the special editions.

Ah, but firstly, I wasn't having a competition. Secondly, the special editions were released at the cinema way before the DVD release, and thirdly, I said "I think" because I wasn't certain on the point of when the prefix was actually added

Yeah, I have to admit, I thought that title was added much later.

Ummm... no we wont! I'm afraid I feel a bout of pedantry coming on.

I made the qualified statement that I didn't believe that "Episode IV" or "A New Hope" were added to the scrolling prologue until the cinematic release of the special editions. The only thing I said with certainty was that both were absent from the original cinematic release. Crummy, on the other hand, stated explicitly and without reservation that the original release featured the prefix "Episode IV", thus leaving no room for the uncertainty to which you allude.

I even saw a documentary a year ago, where you seriously got the idea, that episode 4, the the first one ever released, wasn't even meant to be a trilogy. That really surprised me, because nowadays unplanned sequels usually suck.

Me too. I even remember seeing the trailer in the cinema. I must've been like 7 or something.

 

The following week me and a mate went back and saw it again ... then we hid afterwards, waited for everyone to go and watched it yet again
