I've had times in life where cops didn't do shit, but I've had tiems where they helped out alot
they are just people like everyone else, some suck, but alot are serious about what they do, it's not like the pay is great, they definently aren't in it for the money, there are some in it for power of course, but alot are just there to help

Everywhere else in the US and Canada I've lived, what would have happened:

for the suicide - "call a pastor"
for the crackhead - "we'll come by later for a report for your insurance"
for the dog - "just keep the dog away from your neighbour"
from the kids - "call the PD and get an insurance number"

actually I know when I tell you this you are going to be like "well that's the reason" but it ain't like that, my great uncle was a cop. BUT he has a completely different last name so they wouldn't have known unless we told them
with our dog what might have helped is it is a German Shepard, and only a 6 month old pup at the time
