on my way home from school on a cold rainy dreary day here in Berkeley I happend upon a colorful bus of hippies parked along telegraph. I got to talking with one and he told be about what they had been doing, that they were from a planned community from southern california known as the twelve tribes and that they worship yashua. I figure through sensing my interest he invited me out of the rain into their dark red and cream colored bus where I encountered several more bearded hippies discussing their matters. the bus was lined beautifuly with wood and I could barely hear the noise of the outside world, very serene. I was impressed by what they were doing, they invited me to come WOOFF it with them at their farm in southern cali over the summer. I am strongly considering it, does anyone have any experiances with these people? and whats their views on drug use?
They have a website you should check out www.twelvetribes.com Be careful though if you plan to visit them, I have researched them a little bit and I just can't quite get the word "cult" out of my head. As far as drug use, it's a big "no no".
Ask yourself: "who is Yeshua?" It is a Hebaicized version of the Greek name "Jesus." I know some of the Colorado 12 tribers. They are Old testament Xtian-based, maybe Noahide, with a living representative. (that is a sociolgical hallmark, not religious, for being a cult) Very communal. No personal money, et al. Lots of modesty on the women. They are not pushy in their cafe, but outside of teh business, some are heavy into the conversion trip. I know I'm extra brownie points to the massianic community as a Jew, but my non-Jewish spouse gets it, too. I have issues with Messianic so-called Jews, which is the language they use, althoiugh ostensibly Xtian. But like sodab, I cannot get controlling cult out of my head either. Check 'em out, but make sure somone back home knows EXACTLY where you will be. Here is a site by ex members. obviously they will have a different slant than he group's site. http://www.twelvetribes-ex.org/ Rick ross, a "deprogrammer" complied these stories: http://www.rickross.com/groups/tribes.html Any group can go wrong. (I'm former ISKCON and think they do good but individuals exploit) That doesn't mean all branches are odd. This group has too many warning flags for me.
Yeah, man, actually, that would be your best bet. Not to talk down to you or anything, but you are young and impressionable and ripe pickins for a cult. Also, considering what I've read on here, you might want to steer clear of Zendik too.
i was reading up on one of those sites and noticed that they limit member's contact with the outside world including banning of literature, radios and tv's, the member i was talking to saw a guy with sagging pants and couldnt beleive what he was seeing, i found this rather impressive.
i wish there was not wierd people like this out there. they make life so much harder for everyone else trying to have a good time.
you don't need to be a fish in someone else's pond. if you want to grow spiritually then follow the old advice: "Seek and Ye Shall Find." "Those who walk alone walk with many." Namaste'
Might want to steer clear of the "Children of God" as well. there was an article on them in a recent Rolling Stone. There is some pretty damning stuff in there.
PLEASE contact me about them- I have known them for years, and by "appearances" they are wonderful, but look deeper...it's pretty f'd up what goes on there. Too much detail to go into in one email, but I BEG you to think seriously before getting into this!!! Peace Karyn
we had a run in with a bunch of them at a youth pastor convention we attended. one of them chewed our friend out for wearing a shirt that says "satan's a nerd" because we shouldn't talk badly of one of god's arch angels. LOLOLOL i don't know about anyone else, but when i'm around people who 'aren't right' my body heat starts rising like mad..... and every time i had to walk past these guys i could feel the heat just shooting off me. if yer strong in yer beliefs there's nothing to fear about them. but if you're searching for answers.... you're exactly the kind of member they're fishing for. there's lots of good communities up and down the west coast that allow for individuality and independant thought. did you notice that they all had the same ponytails and matching shorts and shirts and the women wore the same dresses. its cuz its in their rules from what i've read. LOL thats just odd hahaha
My older brother and his family lives near one of their communities in Upstate NY.Since my brother and I are both Sabbath keeping Christians we had concidered checkin' em out until we started reading some of their literature they passed out in the area. Their flyers and pamphlets seemed cool and Christ centered on the surface but if you dig deeper it gets kinda weird. ie For one thing they don't believe in women's equality and The Bible teaches that all are equal in the eyes of The Lord.
