What kind of clothes/jewerly/accerioes did you wear back in the '60s? Dont know why but im all interested in what the teens/hippies wore back then! Like i know some people made their own bellbottoms...where did u get yer clothes from? did you make any? did you wear alot of colorful clothing?
awe teepi that's a great answer, how can I top that?!! I use to make halter tops out of bandanas, and I did a lot of patching of jeans and splitting the seams to add fabric to make larger bells, or simply turning them into a skirt. We made a lot of beaded jewlery and crocheted shawls and panchos. I still make a lot of this stuff.
Hi MO!! When I did think about wearing clothes it was along the same lines as you. There was a place in the east villiage...The Naked Grape..that sold used jeans for 2.00 back in 1970...I remember it was over another store and you had to walk up a real steep stairway of about 30 steps.. The jeans were way cool as alot had embroidery all over them. I used to do alot of needle work. Once when I lived in Venice Beach I came across a big bag of leather and suede scraps a manufacturer of coats had thrown out to the alley, I drug it back to the pad and sewed patches on everyones jeans. I had a favorite pair with the butt wearing out so I put 2 nice butt patches on there. Shortly after that I headed back to Vermont and stopped over in Medina(?)..Medsomething PA, and went horseback riding with some kids that had picked me up and I stayed with for a few days,,,the park we rode at let you stay on the horse all day for just a couple of dollars . We rode for hours and when we got back to their place that night I took off my jeans, and had two big raw spots on my buttocks, that leather had rubbed me raw!!
great story teepi! I can just imagine how sore you must have been. ouch! I also remember wearing long flowing skirts. we called them maxi-skirts and they were really fun to dance and twirl in. I made them out of big bandanas and silky scarfs with just a drawstring for the waist band. maybe I'll try and recreate one.
YES MO!! AND TAKE A PIC!!! Of you in it...twirling... Did you ever slit your jeans front and back and sew in a triangle of patchwork and make a maxi skirt that way??? I made a few bucks in high school making them...
] I still do some of those things....My grandmother tought me how to stitch and sow and create when I was a strappling( which at 25yrs she still say's I am) I still prefer skirts over anything....if you must wear clothing that is;-) I say to all...the movement is not dead she just lie dorment ....she's waking up now though.
yup I sure did! I even taught my daughter to do that and with her long dreads she looks very reggae in her maxi triangle jean skirts! Now if I can just figure out how to post a pic...........I'm so not technically inclined.
For some reason I can only get it to upload small pics. I'll get my son-in-law to help me out on the weekend.
I just want to take this oppertunity to baost that i found an antique pair of bell bottom levis in moms yard stuff, whats truly weird is noone knows were they came from ,they look like they havent been worn, and there my size, trippen huh
mosaic (or anyone eles who knows ) - you said you used to make halter tops out of bandanas.... the only way i can figure to do that is to fold you bandana into a triangle, and sew on stings to the top of the triangel for the halter top straps and tie the 2 bottem points behind your back...is that how you did it? if not could you please tell me how you did this ( because i vaguely remeber seeing it done another way)
hey reading these posts is soo inspiring.... would anybody on this board or in these forums have any suggestions for a 16 year old male who is into the more bohemian style? any suggestions would be very much appreciated.. thx
I would suggest shopping at thrift stores...look in the phone book...lots of cool retro clothes to be had. Also yard sales.
thank you so very much. i began as wanting to be a hippie and it is still cool and i still have the same beliefs as i did at first, but my 'rents are seriously bugging about the clothes, so i'm doing what they want, only my way.. again thank you and i shall try your suggestion asap..
my son use to make some cool patchy jeans and cords by cutting up one pair and randomly patching in onto another. About the bandana halter tops. You can fold the bandana into a triangle, and attach strings to the point of the triangle for tying around your neck, and tie the larger end around your back. Or if you have a larger scarf, you can seperate the point of the triangle and tie it around your neck. My daughter has turned the triangle upside down and made a strapless top by simply tying the long ends around her back and letting the point of the triangle hang down over her belly. It is really cute that way!
I'll answer THIS question, "Literally". I thought my "Dr. Dentons" were pretty neat! After that, it has ALWAYS been Jeans, and T-Shirts for me!
