I was wondering...what do yous guys think of Barrett, how great of a loss was he for the greatest band in the universe? Was Gilmour the right choice? What would happen if Jeff Beck would take over the guitar?

Lastly...Do you think Pink Floyd were better with Syd or without him?

okay, I do think that whatever happened was meant to be, and it was probably for the best. Syd was starting to lose his mind and the band was going nowhere. They couldnt play live shows and it was increasingly more hard to even record in the studio. gilmour was the best choice. he was a childhood friend of syd and roger.... actually dave was the one who taught syd how to play guitar. anyways, dave had the best guitar tone, and his addition was much needed in the group. it may have been nice to have gilmour as the 5th member, and syd as a songwriter..... that would have been the best of both worlds, I would say.

I say the group was better without him. personally. they branched out and did different things..... who knows what would have happened to the group if syd stayed there and dave never joined. they probably would have been a one album band (possibly two or three, I really doubt any more than that) if things didnt happen to syd like they did, you wouldnt have dark side of the moon, wish you were here and the wall, for sure..... I guess the rest is history.

IMHO I think that the Floyd's place in the history of rock would have been reduced to the English 13th Floor Elevators if Syd would have stayed with them.
I prefer the post Barret Floyd BTW.

I prefer Barrett-era Floyd (and post-Floyd Barrett over post-Barrett Floyd), but I'll agree that his exit was probably best for the band.

I like the Syd Barrett Pink FLoyd better musically, it appeals to me more strongly, however, I think his depature pushed them into more commercially viable ventures.

Dont forget he was instrumental to them starting in the first place so dont be too hash on the lad

I'd kinda agree with u here, it was Syd who actually introduced the style of the music played (he was like more of an artist), but he would never be enough for floyd to get widely known, and thats not just because of his drug problem...

Yea, post floyd got commercialised, but always stayed enough self involved and isolated to add that touch of mystery in their music...it's great!!! Anyway you look at it:D

David was a child hood friend of Sids. When David entered the band Roger Water and the other guy's in the band told Sid to teach David all his parts. Sid was knowingly teaching David the parts even though he knew he was being replaced. How fucked up is that? Gilmour was perfect for the job because he could stay straight enough to get through a show without totally being spaced out. "Dark Side Of the Moon" would have never been what it was without Davids very long drug out phrases. He's not flashy, hes not a show off, he is what he is and it was perfect for the music he was doing. Jeff Beck although is a better guitarist you have to look at what is writting ability is. I've never heard a Song written and sang by Beck that was worth a second listening to. Gilmour all the way dude!

Yea i totally agree man. Beck just doesant have the creative bit that gilmour had and which was helping to establish the floyds incredibly recognisable sound.
Gilmour can make u cry with every damn tone he pulled off his strings...hes amazing man!
