Ack! I've got head lice! Even worse, I've gotten a strand of lice which are immune to the head lice medicine from the pharmacy! I hate using normal medicine, but my grandma forced the icky medicine from the pharmacy onto my hair, then picked through my hair for three and a half hours(I have really long hair), only for me to still have head lice. I'm against killing, but I've just about scratched my scalp raw,and really need help! Does anyone know of any alternative remedies?

Which over-the-counter medicine did you use?

I would not use kerosene, that could be very dangerous!

There are several products available by prescription. Go see a doctor, or shave off all your hair.

Vinegar works well. When I had really, really long hair as a child, that's what I used.

you need to get a prescription if OTC medicine doesn't work, but I'm guessing you either didn't use it right, or didn't clean properly.

in order for you to get rid of them completely, you not only need to wash your head, but ALL your clothes, ALL your bedsheets, and take things like stuffed animals and put them in a tightly sealed plastic bag for at least a month. make sure all the furniture is washed and sprayed down, and place a bug bomb in your house to get rid of all the lice and eggs that could be in the fabric and carpets.

By the way, you may be against killing and pharmacy medicine and all that but if you don't use it and you don't thoroughly clean like I suggested, you will have lice for a long time.

you need to wash everything. from clothes to bed stuff, and there is this new comb out called a bug busting one, its like 3 nit combs in one and is ment to be the best, cause some of the over the counter stuff doesnt work as they get immune to it for some reason. but get a comb and comb you hair everyday or more often if you can, its the best way to get them out. also tea tree shampoo and conditionor works wonders. have fun

Ugh !No, I would not reccomend kerosene!!!Take it from someone who did...I went through this with my daughter when she was in pre school, and I tried everything! Here is what worked for me:generously apply olive oil, work through hair and cover hair with plastic bag(not your head)overnight. In the morning, wash out with dish soap, and follow with vinegar rinse.Using a fine tooth comb, comb out every single egg,and if you have to get someone to help you. It's very important to get all the eggs out. Also all bedding and furniture needs to be sprayed or bagged in plastic, put in the dryer etc...clothes,pillows,rugs you name it.
The olive oil will smother the little buggers, and the vinegar helps to detangle and remove eggs.Good luck!

mayonnaise works well too ,,, get it all through hair n wrap in plastic ( bag) n leave on over night, then all the nits n shit comb out n yer hair is a slimy gross mess but oil in mayo makes it easy to go thru with nit pickin combs,,,,, then wash the hell outta it
as ev one else said wash everything etc etc

a couple aussie friends i have say to wear hairspray in yer hair,,, not enough to make it nasty sticky etc just a light spray n it will keep them at bay...

Don't use kerosene!!!! My great grandmother had lice and they put kerosene on her hair, for lack of anything else back then. She had VERY little hair for the rest of her life. She was almost bald.
Why don't you just shave off all of your hair??

I'm so sorry! Headlice is one of my least favorite things EVER. I had it waaayyy too many times in elementary school and junior high. In addition to the stuff that everyone else has said, check for the lice all the time. Like, go up to a mirror and comb out your hair and look at as many different sections of hair as you can often, even after the buggers are supposedly gone, in case they decide to come back. Best of luck to you!

yeah, the olive oil and vinegar works well... just be sure to repeat it about 48 hours later to make sure and wash with a tea tree shampoo to help prevent them from coming back. i remembr going through hell when i was a nanny for a little girl and she kept bringing it home and i would constantly keep fighting it. horrible times there.
    good luck!

All the natural remedies mentioned are the best. the chemical treatments, prescription meds included, are basically pesticides and can be toxic. Plus when my child had head lice years ago those chemical products didn't even work. I was at my wits end. I used everything I could find over the counter and from the physician. those %&* lice kept coming back, for months. I washed everything, picked thru my child's hair and still they came back. Finally found a product on the internet that was nontoxic and mostly herbal. and IT WORKED. amazing. I just did a search and it's still around but the product has a different name than when I bought it, but same company. If anyone wants the website, PM me. I don't know if it's ok to post it here, I do not have any financial ties to this product, but just want to help if anyone needs the info.
