yup i know what you mean....i am trying to get the same thing done...and i guarantee my future kids will never have to go through a war because war is the most horrific thing in the world...thats what my mother has been protecting me from and it is a good thing she has otherwise i would be screwed.
Mothering Magazine had an article on CO status and how to document it a month or so back. I'll see if it's on their website. If not, you can request a copy of the magazine in print form. The article: http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/family_society/avoid_draft.html
Sweetdreadlover, I believe you are forgetting who is residing in the White House. This is a man who never met a law that he couldn't break. I don't think anyone is safe from a draft. If I am not mistaken, being a conscientious objecter does not exclude you from the military. A conscientious objecter may still serve in battle as an ambulance driver, medic or in a similiar capacity. On a different topic who is the curly haired girl at the bottom of your photograph giving the peace sign? She is adorable
Recently, due to the drop in recruitment it is no longer necessary to have a diploma to join. They passed a bill that approved changing draft pilicies to include kids who had dropped out or had not obtained a diploma or ged. http://www.armedforcescareers.com/articles/article11.html Here is an article from 99- the change is newer but I couldn't find info- will look when my ds is sleeping. So, not having a diploma does not keep you safe anymore but it may limit your career options.
I have noticed that unfortunately the message option does not include a button to change from type-over editing, so, if you're in a hurry editing your post is a pain in the neck. Lets cut the lady some slack. Had
My father's friend was drafted even though he was a CO. He skipped into Canada but was dragged back and they told him that he had to serve SOMEWHERE. He went to Vietnam and worked in the morgue. Then, in the early eighties a bunch of his assets were siezed as punishment for his original desertion charge. Being a CO does not make you exempt from military service. If they are desperate enough to draft they will take you regardless but they will make you do something that doesn't directly involve killing others- translating, reporting, medic work etc.
I wanted to homeschool so badly because I hated the social aspect of highschool. I couldn't take the mindless gossip of the students and as arrogant as it sounds, I thought I could do better than hang out with people like that. I felt so above it all. Then I did homeschooling. I hated it! I still had "teachers" that i could email or phone .. and i just mailed in assignments.. but.. if you missed one day, you'd be sooo behind... it was even more stressful than regular school. regular school was one hour a day of each subject, but i couldn't finish on time with home school. i had to work for hours on each subject. needless to say, i'm back into regular schooling and i'll graduate on time. i just can't wait until college.
maggie sugar, i just wanted to tell you that you seem like an AWESOME mom... taking your kids to anti-war stuff... i wish MY mom was more open and vocal about stuff like that!
i was lucky enuff to have a mom like that..she did all of that kind of stuff with me...which is why i loved being homeschooled..it showd me new prospects on life that i loved to see and helped mold me inot who i am today.
i 100% agree that homeschool is awesome...for some kids. my mom schooled me, my brother and sister. she started becasue like alot of kids my brother would get done with his lessons before the other kids and then draw pictures on his work pages....i was homeschooled until my sophmore year, and then i got my diploma. after working my ass of in public school casue they didnt think i had taken half the classes we told them i had. they woldnt even let me test out of some of them becasue they were senior classes and i took um when i was a freshman.
That is 1 thing wrong with public high school...having to wait till your in 11th or 12th grade to take the really good classes that ya like. If ya like them in 8th or 9th grade then that is when ya should be able to take them. My son joined the Army in March 2004...he had to prove that he got his GED before they let him in. I got my GED a few months after he was born but have NEVER had to prove I had it for college or for any job I applied for. **Maggie Sugar...your little girl is soooo adorable. Not sure how old she is, but do ya homeschool her?**
i know...and alot of what people think about kids who are homeschooled being socially awkward is really stupid too...i grew up on a commune kind of farm, and i never had any problems making friends...now i work at walmart and have no probs getting along with people.
