I'm thinking about buying myself an old van, ripping out the back and throwing in my futon,a camp stove and few other belongings and just living in the van. Has anyone else done this? Any advice would be great!! I'd continue to work at my job for a while, but then start supporting myself with my crochet work. Thanks for any help or advice you can give!!
i dont have any advice but it sounds awesome. i think once they have cheaper internet access from a car i will do the same cuz my work will soon depend on the interent and i can travel and work all at the same time! or hopefully. good luck, it sounds like you will be on a wonderful journey soon! love and light
My ex lived in a van for a long time. His van didn't run though...it stayed parked and he just lived there. He liked it,his only complaint was that he missed having a regular oven/stove. Hope it works for you!
my biggest dream is to throw a bed & some stuff in the back of a van & go cross country. Goin to school/ saving up a bit of money for now but SOMEDAY!
And what will you do when you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night or take a shower? Or wash your pots and pans? I've traveled and lived out of a van. Know what's freaky scary? When you're parked like in a parking lot or remote area asleep and in the middle of the night someone tries to break in!
Be careful of where you park, and how long the van sits in one place. In 2000, I was in town from my homestead for a few weeks and needed to use my pick-up to haul supplies. That left my one year old Subaru Outback in a parking lot at the lake where the float plane is for a couple of days. I didn't like leaving it there because it is nice to just sleep in the back instead of needing to set up a tent. I got a phone call from the state troopers informing that my car was totaled. It seems that some unknown person(s) use machine guns to distroy my car. The trooper said the car was shot up from end to end. My pilot heard the shots and made the report. The point is: I had been sleeping in the back of the car only a few days before the incendent, and would have been killed if I had been in the car during the shooting. Did the shooter look in the car first? Maybe, maybe not. He may of just started shooting because the car was in the same place for more than one day. (Let's not even start on how hard it was to work with the insurance claim)
I gather you really need to be careful about where you park when you are in town...but this sounds like a great idea...mobile van living....sounds like a great plan....wonder what it would really take to start it going?????

The only problem I would have with that is the showers.. where do you go to take a shower? I'll end up buying a laptop eventually, too.. so that will take care of my techie needs. *old van good enough for hippies: anywhere from $600 to a couple thousand.. maybe less *I checked ebay and futons seem to be around $200. (I could be wrong, just glanced over at them) *ripping out the seats: free *getting good buddies to accompany you: priceless <3
You can purchase portable camp showers and create your own shower ...or you can go to the YWCA and take showers...or churches even have showers , maybe you can take one if you ask them.
there's always a way... you can even splurge on a cheap campsite & use the showers there if you get desperate
