Thought I would share a Protest piece I have in a show next month. Sort of my commentary on the good and bad of chemotherapy; and also how little we know about cancer (hence the misspelled wording in the painting).
Very interesting. I'm really interested in the different meanings of this work so if you could explain it to me i'd appreciate it.
Let me start by saying that it's actually an abstract piece. The protest is personal, not right up front. Similar to a piece of instrumental music that goes from bright and cheery to fast and mean, and back again. I mean, how do you know exactly what the composer is saying?... Having said that... The brighter colors represent hope, the black- despair. Also, it's very hard to see in this photo, but the yellow is painted with up and down strokes representing the lines of a 'heart-beat' meter, with a straight line right through the middle. The misshapen head due to a cancerous tumor on one side of the head, the black period representing death as the oft-times result of this invasive, ond often ineffective, type of treatment. Again, the misspelling of the word 'chemo' is both a representation of the lack of understanding we, and scientists, have of this type of medicine; and also the spelling 'kee-mo' makes it seem 'cooler' than it is. But remember, it's an abstract, combining grafitti and primitive elements. Hope the explanation helps everyone look at it a little differently. Thanks!
